UWPL Round 3 Review

After Round 3 of the Umbro Women’s Premier League we have new competition leaders as the ladder continues to tighten up at the top end of the competition.

Our round 3 Match of the Round saw Revesby Workers Maroon bounce back with a big win over Birrong Sports.

Elsewhere, Georges River Thistle picked up back-to-back wins after defeating East Bankstown Yellow, while Revesby Workers White defeated East Bankstown Red in a top of the table clash.

Match of the Round: Revesby Workers Maroon 6-1 Birrong Sports

Revesby Workers Maroon put on a show against a slow starting Birrong Sports as they won the game 6-1 bouncing back from a massive defeat in round 2.

Workers Marissa Tsimboukis would be the first to score in the game as her shot hit the back of the net to put the workers 1-goal ahead.

It wouldn’t be long till Workers had their second as Abbey Warren also fired home her shot in the 27th minute to give Workers a 2-goal advantage as Birrong looked to be on the back foot early.

Birrong didn’t take their foot off the throttle as they continued to create attacking chances, but they were unable to convert as the sides went into halftime with Revesby Maroon leading 2-0.

Birrong have struggled in front of goal in the competition so far and they would need to come out firing in the second if they were to overturn their first half deficit.

Workers were straight back into dominating possession as they had done in the first half, and it was Mya Donnelly who opened the second half scoring with her goal in the 59th minute of the match as she dominates the scoring list in 2023.

Workers Maroon would get their fourth goal three minutes later courtesy of Marianna Konidaris as her side leads the game 4-0 with a comeback looking to look out of reach for Birrong.

Workers Emily Carruthers would add their 5th goal in the 68th minute of the match before Olivia Lambkin made it 6-0 for the workers ten minutes later.

Birrong’s Emma Pavez would score a consolation goal in the 82nd minute to bring it back to 6-1 but it was too little too late as Revesby Workers Maroon won the match 6-1.

Revesby Maroon now sit 3rd on the competition ladder 1-point off first place, while Birrong Sports remain in 5th spot as they continue to look for their first win of the season.

Georges River Thistle 4-0 East Bankstown Yellow

Georges River Thistle make it back-to-back wins in the competition as they defeated East Bankstown Yellow 4-0 as Easts still search for their first points of the season.

Georges River Thistle looked destined to score the first goal in the first half, however Easts Yellow have been resilient and strong in defence in the first half of their opening two games and this game was no different as they were able to hold out a well-structured Georges River Thistle attack for most of the first half.

However, when the game looked to be heading into halftime at 0-0, ex Bankstown City Lions junior, Monica Nolevski hit the back of the net to give Thistle a 1-0 lead going into half time.

In the second half both sides looked to create goal scoring opportunities once again, with both sides unable to finish their chances.

It wasn’t until the 75th minute of the match when Thistle finally found their second goal as their number 11, Jade Averillo found the back of the net.

Thistle would go on to score their third in the 84th minute courtesy of a goal by Brooke Williams followed by their captain, Paige Casacchia scoring moments later to give Thistle a 4-0 lead with only minutes left to play.

The game would end with Thistle defeating Easts Yellow 4-0 as Easts second halves continue to hurt them.

Thistle currently sits second on the competition ladder a point behind first place, while Easts Yellow sit 6th as they continue to look for their first points of the season.

Revesby Workers White 3-2 East Bankstown Red

Revesby Workers White defeated East Bankstown Red 3-2 as they are the only undefeated team to start the competition as East Bankstown Red take their first loss of the season.

Revesby Workers White were the better team to start the game as Workers number 11, Karen Bennett found the back of the net to give her side a 1-0 lead.

It didn’t take long before Workers White had their second as it was Karen Bennett once again scoring her second goal of the match in the 13th minute to as her side went to a 2-0 lead.

The first 15 minutes looked to be all Revesby Workers as they scored again in the 15th minute of the match as Danielle Mary Merlino’s shot found the back of the net as Workers White jumped to a 3-0 lead in the 15 minutes of the match.

After a slow start to the match, East Bankstown Red started to tighten up their defence and gain control of the match, but they had a massive job on their hands if they were going to get back into this match.

Just before half time, East Bankstown’s captain Chiara Nohra would score in the 43rd minute to give her side some momentum going into the sheds at halftime.

In the second half, Easts Red continued to create attacking opportunities as they aimed to come back from their early deficit, however, a resilient Workers defence were able to hold out everything East through at them.

Easts Chiara Nohra would make it a brace for herself in the 86th minute of the match to bring the game back to 3-2 but it was too little too late as Revesby Workers White won the game 3-2.

East Red now sit in 4th position on the ladder, while Revesby Workers White are now leaders of the competition as they are the only remaining undefeated team in the competition.

BUPL Round 7 Review

Round seven of the Bankstown Umbro Premier League may be the most exciting round we’ve had yet with all games going down to the wire!

Our Match of the Round saw Georges River Thistle get back to winning ways as they defeated Greenacre Eagles on Friday night at Padstow Park.

Elsewhere, Panania Diggers remain undefeated as they beat Central Sydney Wolves, while Padstow Hornets beat Revesby Workers after some late drama.

Padstow United defeated Bass Hill Rangers in a 7-goal thriller, while Bankstown Sports Strikers were able to defeat Yagoona Lions.

Match of the Round: Georges River Thistle 2-1 Greenacre Eagles               Reserve Grade Score: Georges River Thistle 1-1 Greenacre Eagles

Georges River Thistle got back to winning ways this weekend as they narrowly defeated Greenacre Eagles which saw the Eagle’s three game unbeaten run come to an end.

In a game which could see Greenacre Eagles jump on top of Georges River Thistle on the ladder, Georges River Thistle would be looking to start fast to get the valuable 3-points.

It wouldn’t be long in this fixture before we had our opening goal as Thistle’s Mohamad Elzein found the back of the net in the 7th minute of the game to give the home side a 1-goal advantage early into this match.

Greenacre Eagles have done well this year to get back into matches after conceding early and this game would not be different as in the 21st minute of the match, Greenacre’s top scorer Alam Dabel would net the equaliser to get them back into the match.

The sides would go into halftime at 1-1.

Both sides would look to create chances early into the second half as they both were eager for the victory.

In the 65th minute of the match it would be Thistle’s number 10, Samuel Romero who would break the deadlock as his shot found the back of the net.

Samuel Romero’s goal would ultimately win the match for Thistle as the score ended 2-1 with Georges River Thistle winning the match.

Georges River Thistle currently sit 5th on the competition ladder while Greenacre Eagles stay in 8th spot after their loss to Thistle.

Central Sydney Wolves 2-3 Panania    Diggers                                                                          Reserve Grade Score: Central Sydney Wolves 4-3 Panania Diggers

Panania Diggers remain undefeated in the competition as they defeated Central Sydney Wolves 3-2 in a game that could have gone either way.

Central Sydney Wolves did not take long before they had the opening goal as in the 4th minute of the game, Wolves number 8 Arkin Rasim Oglou would find the back of the net as they looked to hand the away side their first loss of the year with an early goal.

Panania Diggers would fire back in the 26th minute of the match as Panania’s Mitchel Jeffs found the back of the net to bring the scores level at 1-1.

Jeffs would find the back of the net again in the 41st minute of the match to give his side a goal advantage and give himself a brace going into halftime.

With Central Sydney Wolves on the backfoot and eager for their first back-to-back win of the season, Wolves Aron Nunez Laura’s shot would find the back of the net in the 55th minute to bring the scores level at 2-2.

Both sides would start to throw a lot more attacking pressure at their opposition as they both looked for the winner.

In the 70th minute of the match it would be Panania Digger’s Thomas Potts who would score the goal that broke the deadlock when his shot rifled the back of the net giving Panania a 1-goal advantage.

With some late excitement at the end of the match it would be Panania who ended the game beating Central Sydney Wolves 3-2.

After their loss, Wolves sit 7th on the ladder, while Panania Digger’s drift further from the rest of the pack as they remain top of the table with 4-points splitting them and seventh place.

Padstow Hornets 3-2 Revesby Workers                                                                          Reserve Grade Score: Padstow Hornets 1-0 Revesby Workers

Padstow Hornets were able to get back to winning ways as they defeated Revesby Workers 3-2 in a game that Revesby Workers will take a lot of confidence from moving forward.

The 2022 champions looked destined to win this game as they looked for their first win in 4 games, and it didn’t take long before they had their opening goal.

In the 16th minute of the match, Hornets Marcus Tsekenis found the back of the net Hornets the advantage.

Although defence has been an issue this year for the Workers side, they were able to hold out a strong Hornets side for the rest of the half as they went into the sheds at halftime down 1-0.

The Workers came out strong in the second half as they believed they could still win this match; however, Hornets would find their second goal of the game in the 52nd minute as Manuel Angelopoulos found the back of the net to give Padstow a 2-goal advantage.

Revesby Workers started to hit their strides as they began to form a comeback.

Revesby Workers striker, Ashtun Letele found the back of the net in the 60th minute to bring the game back to 2-1.

The game would become even more difficult for Revesby Workers as in the 73rd minute, Workers Caleb Tall would be sent off leaving them with 10-men for the rest of the match.

Although a player down, Revesby Workers would find the back of the net once again with their number 10, Bojan Hadzic scoring to bring the scores level at 2-2.

Both teams began to push forward as they looked for the winner, however in the 89th minute of the match it would be Padstow Hornets who win the match after a goal by Alexander Kyriakopoulos.

Padstow Hornets would hold out for the remaining minutes left to defeat Revesby Workers 3-2 in a thrilling contest.

Padstow Hornets remain in 4th position on the competition ladder while Revesby Workers still sit in 10th position still without a point.

Bass Hill Rangers 3-4 Padstow United                                                                                     Bass Hill Rangers 3-2 Padstow United

Padstow United pick up their second win of the season as they defeated Bass Hill Rangers in a seven-goal thriller.

Padstow United’s attack has been on fire this season and if they were to win this fixture, they would need to be lethal in front of goal.

Padstow United would be the first to score in this fixture as their prolific goal-scorer this season, Rafa Coutinho would score the first goal of the match in the 29th minute of the match as Padstow United would lead the game 1-0 going into half time.

Bass Hill have struggled to score goals this season, with that in mind and a goal down they looked to set-up more attacking in the second half.

Bass Hill’s Lachlan Merlino would bring the scores level in the 56th minute with his goal before two minutes later Padstow United regained their goal advantage through another goal by Rafa Coutinho.

Bass Hill’s Pavlos Bormpandonakis would then give the game it’s 3rd goal in 4 minutes as in the 60th minute of the match his shot would find the back of the net as the games would be level once again.

The game would take another twist in the 62nd minute with Rafa Coutinho completing his hattrick as his shot hit the back of the net to give Padstow United the lead for the third time in this match.

Padstow United’s John Martinez would score their 4th goal of the match in the 85th minute as he looked to have sealed the win for his side.

Bass Hill’s Abbas El Sayed looked to spark a late comeback as he was able to score in the 90th minute, however it was too late as Padstow United won the game 4-3.

Padstow United sit 6th on the competition and 2-points away from the top, while Bass Hill still sit in 9th position as they continue to fight for their first points of the season.

Bankstown Sports Strikers 2-0 Yagoona Lions                                                               Reserve Grade Score: Bankstown Sports Strikers 2-0 Yagoona Lions

Bankstown Sports Strikers continue to push themselves closer to the top 2 as they were able to defeat Yagoona Lions 2-0.

Bankstown Sports Strikers needed an important 3-points as their win would see them sit 2-points behind Yagoona.

Yagoona Lions have been one of the form attacking sides of the competition, however it was Bankstown Sports Strikers who would striker first in this match.

Strikers number 6, Said Mamouni would find the back of the net in the 22nd minute of the match to give Strikers an important 1-goal advantage.

With both teams able to create chances but unable to convert the sides would go into halftime with Strikers leading 1-0.

Bankstown Sports Strikers defence has been solid to start the year which was proven in this fixture as Yagoona Lions dangerous attack was unable to break them down.

With Bankstown Sports Strikers holding Yagoona out for most of the second half, they would finally get their second goal of the game as Pedro Almeida Pereira netted for the hosts to give them a 2-0 lead.

We wouldn’t see another goal for the final 10 minutes of the game as Bankstown Sports Strikers defeated Yagoona Lions 2-0.

Bankstown Sports Strikers sit in 3rd position on the competition ladder, while Yagoona Lions sit in 2nd position, four points behind the competition leaders.

UWPL Round 3 Preview

Some teams are finding form while others will look to pick themselves back up as the Umbro Women’s Premier League competition enters Round Three.

The Match of the Round sees Birrong on the hunt for their first win of the season as they host Revesby Workers Maroon looking to bounce back after a devastating loss.

Elsewhere, Georges River Thistle will look for back-to-back wins as they host East Bankstown Yellow looking for their first points of the season, while it is a top 2 clash between Revesby Workers White and East Bankstown Red who are both undefeated to start the season.

Sunday 23rd April, 2023

Match of the Round: Birrong Sports vs Revesby Workers Maroon, 3pm @ Padstow Park                                                                                                                                        Previous Meeting: Revesby Workers 1-4 Birrong Sports - AAL1 Finals, 2022

Birrong Sports are still on the hunt for their first win of the season as they take on a Revesby Workers Maroon who come off a big loss to Georges River Thistle as they play at Padstow Park.

These two sides met last in Week One of the All-Age Ladies One finals series last year, which Birrong Sports took out 4-1.

Birrong Sports have looked strong in defence in their opening first two games having only conceded a goal in each of their opening games.

However, with the least goals scored so far this season, with only one goal in their opening two fixtures, Birrong Sports will look to improve in the attacking half and create more chances if they are to get a much-needed result in this fixture.

Birrong have conceded first in both of their opening two fixtures. If they are to score first in this game, they could go a long way to winning this match.

Workers Maroon started the season in fantastic fashion, however, a shock 7-1 loss to Georges River Thistle has left them needing an important 3-points if they are to stay towards the top of the table.

Workers Maroon have proven they can score goals with nine goals in two games; however, they will be looking to be stronger and more structured in defence, so they do not have a repeat of last week.

If Workers attack can click, with their midfield and defence holding up, they could be on their way to their second win of the season.

With two strong teams going head-to-head, expect to see a tactically challenging match where either side could come out on top.

Georges River Thistle vs East Bankstown Yellow, 3pm @ Coleman Park

This is the first meeting between these two clubs.

Georges River Thistle look for back-to-back wins in the competition as they take on a determined East Bankstown Yellow looking for their first points of the season.

Georges River Thistle showed their firepower again last week as they picked up a 7-1 win against Revesby Workers Maroon.

Georges River Thistle suffered a 4-3 defeat to Narellan Rangers Soccer Club in Round one of the Sapphire Cup on Wednesday Night and they will be hungry to get back winning ways.

Georges River Thistle have proven to be strong in attack as they have scored 8-goals in their opening two matches, however, with a few new signings in defence for 2023, they will be looking for their first clean sheet this season.

Easts Yellow have been unable to secure points in their opening two matches to start the season, however, they were much improved in their game last week against second place Revesby Workers White and they will be looking to improve again against tough opposition.

Easts look to be a resilient side competing in games week on week.

Their second half performances will be a priority this week as they have struggled to keep their opposition at bay in the second half of their matches.

If they can control the match and not give up easy chances, they could do well to contain Thistle and create an entertaining contest.

Expect this to be a match filled with chances and hard tackling as both sides look to win the first meeting between these two sides.

Revesby Workers White vs East Bankstown Red, 3pm @ Kelso Park      Previous Meeting: Revesby Workers 1-4 East Bankstown – AAL Rd 1, 2022

Revesby Workers White and East Bankstown Red go head-to-head in a top of the table clash as both sides are undefeated to start the season.

The last time these two sides met was in Round 1 of the All-Age Ladies competition where East Bankstown comfortable defeated Revesby Workers 4-1.

Workers White proved they are more the capable this season after making the step up from the All-Age Ladies Division two competition last season.

Although going down 2-1 early last week to Easts Yellow, Revesby fought their way back against a 10 women Easts to win the game 4-2.

The Workers will need to be firing in attack if they are to breakthrough a strong Easts defence who has only conceded one goal this season.

Easts Red deservingly lead the competition to start the season after back-to-back wins against 2022 grand finalists.

They have been the strongest defensive side to start the season only conceding 1 goal, however, they will look to create more chances in front of goal if they are to dominate teams this season.

After losing mid-week in the Sapphire Cup in a mixed East Bankstown team between their Easts Red and Yellow, they will be more then determined to get back to winning ways.

With two undefeated sides going head-to-head, expect this to be an encounter with plenty of fight that could go either way.

BUPL Round 7 Preview

BUPL Round 7 Preview

With our Bankstown Umbro Premier League round 7 around the corner our competition is very tight around the middle of the ladder.

This weekend is very important for teams to get results if they’re to stay towards the top of the competition.

The Match of the round sees Georges River Thistle looking to bounce back after their round 6 loss as they take on Greenacre Eagles who are looking to continue their 3-game unbeaten run.

Meanwhile, Central Sydney Wolves look for back-to-back wins for the first time this season as they play league leaders in Panania Diggers, while Padstow Hornets look to end their 3-game winless drought as they take on a Revesby Workers who will be hungry for their first points of the season.

Elsewhere, Bankstown Sports Strikers look to chase the top two as they play Yagoona Lions who sit in second spot, while Bass Hill Rangers look to turn good form into points as Padstow United visit while they look for their second win of the season.

Friday, 21st April 2023

Match of the Round: Georges River Thistle vs Greenacre Eagles, 8:30pm @ Padstow Park                                                                                                                                          Previous Meeting: Georges River Thistle 4-4 Greenacre Eagles, Rd 3 2022

Georges River Thistle look to return to winning ways this weekend with key players out for suspension, while Greenacre Eagles look to continue their good form as they are on a 3-game unbeaten run.

The last time these two sides met was in a catch-up game of round 3 in 2022 where the sides could not be separated in an 8-goal thriller.

In the round 3 game last year, Greenacre Eagles Genki Kohyama scored a hattrick, however the eagles will need a new goal scorer in this fixture as Kohyama left the eagles to join NPL heavyweight Southern Districts.

Greenacre Eagles have been firing in front of goal of late with 8 of their 10 goals this season coming in their last 3 matches.

If Greenacre are to get a result in this match, they will be looking to their key attackers Alam Dabel and Taylor Saghabi who have a combined 7 goals this season.

Greenacre Eagles will look to play forward fast and utilise their up-tempo type of game play as three points will see them jump Georges River Thistle on the table as they look to hover around the top end of the competition.

Georges River Thistle’s 3-game win streak came to an end in last week’s game as a determined Yagoona Lions team defeated them 3-1 due to poor discipline by the Thistle side.

Thistle will be without key players Joshua Thomas and Sumathas Prasitsanpreecha due to suspensions they picked up in last weekend’s game.

However, Thistle have proven this season, that they are a strong side with enough depth in their squad to make up for some key players being out for this fixture.

Georges River Thistle have proven in their season so far that they are a tenacious team who will fight to the end as they look to get an important 3-points that will keep them in the top 5 of the competition ladder.

With an in-form Greenacre Eagles being hosted by a determined Georges River Thistle at Padstow Park, expect nothing less than a clash where both sides give their all until the final whistle.

Saturday, 22nd April 2023

Central Sydney Wolves vs Panania Diggers, 4pm @ Lockwood Park                  Previous Meeting: Central Sydney Wolves 1-7 Panania Diggers – Rd19, 2022

Central Sydney Wolves will be looking for back-to-back wins for the first time this season as they host Panania Diggers who lead the competition and are looking to continue their undefeated start to the season.

The last time these two sides met was in round 19 of the 2022 season when Panania Diggers stormed away in the second half to beat the Wolves 7-1.

Central Sydney Wolves have been a much different outfit this season as they sit 6th on the competition ladder 2-pints behind 3rd place.

However, Central Sydney Wolves have lacked consistency in their performances as they have not been able to win back-to-back games all season.

Playing at home this weekend, if the Wolves can hold out Panania early and then start to dominate possession, they will have every chance of securing a result this week.

Panania Diggers have been just shy of perfect with their start to the season with 5 wins and 1 draw in their first 6 games.

Panania Diggers have had the best defence in the league so far, only conceding 4 goals in the 6 games they have played.

Panania have also been clinical in front of goal and attackers Joshua Adams and Nicholas Vertsonis have been key to their positive results as they have scored a combined 12 goals this season.

With in-form attackers and a solid defence, Panania will look to continue to prove why they are at the top of the table this week.

With both sides coming off important victories, this clash will be a battle for pride and crucial points where neither side will give up.

Padstow Hornets vs Revesby Workers, 4pm @ Marco Reserve                    Previous Meeting: Padstow Hornets 0-0 Revesby Workers – Rd 15, 2022

Padstow Hornets will take on Revesby Workers this weekend as both sides are in desperate need of a win for different reasons.

Both sides are coming off defeats in round 6 as Revesby Workers are still without a win this season, while Padstow Hornets have been without a win in their last 3 games.

The last time these two sides met they were unable to be separated as the game resulted in a 0-0 draw.

Padstow Hornets have a much more diverse scoring list to others in the competition, with 6 different goal scorers for their 11 goals in the league so far this season.

They will be hoping to be more focused in the late stages of their games as they were given a shock defeat to Bankstown Sports Strikers in the grand final rematch as Strikers scored 3 unanswered goals late into the second half with only 10 men on the field.

Although Hornets conceded 4 goals last weekend to Bankstown Sports Strikers, they have been one of the best defensive teams in the competitions and they will be looking for a clean sheet plus a win against Revesby Workers as they look stay at the top end of the competition.

Revesby Workers continue to struggle as they have not been able to register a point all season.

Revesby Workers defence continues to be their biggest downfall this season as they will look to continue to work on their defence if they are to improve on their performance’s week on week.

However, Revesby Workers continue to show up and put 100% into their games and will be determined to see their season turn around this week.

A win for either side would be crucial in the context of their season; for Hornets to push towards the top of the table and for Revesby to find their first points of the season.

Bankstown Sports Strikers vs Yagoona Lions, 4pm @ Crest                                            Previous Meeting: Yagoona Lions 1-3 Bankstown Sports Strikers – Rd 17, 2022

Bankstown Sports Strikers look to get an important 3-points against Yagoona Lions as Yagoona sit 5-points above Bankstown Sports Strikers in 3rd place.

In this fixture last season, Bankstown Sports Strikers were able to defeat Yagoona Lions in a first half goal fest where Yagoona Lions 2023 key signing, Jamie Bazevski scored 2-goals for Bankstown Sports Strikers as he will play his old team for the first time since leaving in 2022.

Bankstown Sports Strikers are unbeaten in their last 2 games as they come off a massive victory against Padstow Hornets after a late second half come back with 10 men.

The Strikers will be without Rocci Gabey this weekend as he was issued a red card in their game against the Hornets, however, the Strikers proved they a resilient side who can win games with any players they field on the day.

If they can remain vigilant in defence and hold out attacks against a well organised Yagoona attack, they could continue their momentum against Yagoona Lions.

Yagoona Lions controlled possession in their match against Georges River Thistle, however they would have been disappointed to not have put the game to bed earlier in the match as Thistle had 9 men for the last 55 minutes of the match.

They have not kept a clean sheet this season, so their defence will be a bigger focus this week.

However, with Jamie Bazevski firing in their recent matches with hopes of being dangerous up front against his old side, Bazevski will be key if Yagoona are to win this match and remain close to the competition leaders Panania.

Both sides will be brimming with confidence based on last week’s results and will fight until the end for a positive result this week; this promises to be a tight and entertaining match.

Bass Hill Rangers vs Padstow United, 4pm @ Walshaw Park                        Previous Meeting: Bass Hill Rangers 0-5 Padstow United – Rd 4, 2021

Bass Hill Rangers continue to strive for their first points of the season as they take on Padstow United who desperately look for their second win of the season.

The last time these two sides met was in round 4 of the 2021 season where Padstow United comfortably beat the Rangers 5-0.

Bass Hill have had a tough start to their season having played all the top 5 teams to start the season.

Although being winless in their first 6 matches, Bass Hill have proved they are still a tough side to beat this year as they have been competitive in all their matches.

If Bass Hill are to get a positive result against Padstow United, they will need to be more disciplined in this match and create more chances in attack as they have scored the least goals in the competition so far.

Padstow United are undefeated in their last 3 matches, however, with only one win so far this season, they will see this fixture as a must win game if they are to keep up with the top of the competition.

Padstow United are still the top goal scorers of the competition as their fire power up top continues to be relentless in front of goal.

With John Martinez and Rafa Coutinho leading the goal charge and a squad full of exuberance, they will hope to achieve their second win of the season.

BUPL Round 6 Review

After the completion of round 6 of the Bankstown Umbro Premier League competition, we are starting to see the top sides drift away as well as a very tight mid table with 3 points splitting 3rd and 8th place.

Our round 6 match of the round saw Bankstown Sports Strikers defeat Padstow Hornets in the grand final re-match after Bankstown Sports Strikers completed an incredible second half comeback.

Central Sydney Wolves got back to winning ways against Revesby Workers, while Padstow United and Greenacre Eagles could not be separated.

Yagoona Lions ended Georges River Thistles winning streak, while Panania Diggers beat Bass Hill Rangers.

Match of the Round: Padstow Hornets 3-4 Bankstown Sports Strikers                 Reserve Grade Score: Padstow Hornets 2-5 Bankstown Sports Strikers

Bankstown Sports Strikers defeated Padstow Hornets in a grand final rematch that did not disappoint with Strikers ending Padstow Hornets undefeated start to the season.

Padstow Hornets were able to defeat Bankstown Sports Strikers 1-0 in the grand final season, and with such a low scoring history to this fixture as well as both Hornets and Strikers struggling to find the back of the net in recent games, we expected this game to be a low scoring affair.

However, Padstow Hornets had other ideas as in the 28th minute of the game, Hornets Manuel Angelopoulos fired Hornets to a 1-0 lead.

With Bankstown Sports Strikers a goal down, it would not take long for them to get their leveller as their in-form number 9, Robson de Souza found the back of the net to level the score going into halftime.

Padstow Hornets looked to come out firing in the second half as 2022’s top goal scorer, Neil Philippou was able to grab his first goal of the season in the 50th minute of the match to give his side a 1 goal advantage once again.

Moments later, it was Padstow Hornets number 7, Costa Fiakos who added Padstow Hornets third of the match as it began to look like Padstow Hornets would continue to dominate this game.

Things became worse for the Strikers side as in the 57th minute of the game their number 4, Rocci Giovanni Gabey would be shown a red card and the Strikers were down to ten men.

A Bankstown Sports Strikers with 10 men on the field and two goals down, the Bankstown Sports Strikers game looked to be out of this game.

However, in the 73rd minute of the match, Strikers Robson De Souza would hit the back of the net for the second time in the match to get his side back to 3-2 with 17 minutes left in the match.

Seven minutes later, it would be a Strikers substitute, Cameron Campisi who looked to save a point for his team as he found the back of the net in the 80th minute.

With both sides pushing forward to try and win the match, it was Strikers 2023 new signing, Cameron Campisi who would score in the 88th minute of the match to get a brace for himself and win the game for his side.

Padstow Hornets take their 1st loss of the season as they drop to fourth place as Bankstown Sports Strikers win takes them back up to third place on the competition ladder.

Revesby Workers 0-4 Central Sydney Wolves                                                           Reserve Grade Score: Revesby Workers 0-8 Central Sydney Wolves

Revesby Workers continue their struggles in 2023 as Central Sydney Wolves returned to winning ways with their 4-0 victory over Revesby Workers.

Central Sydney Wolves had not won in their last two games, with a win in this fixture being important to their side sticking close to the top 5 positions on the competition ladder.

Revesby Workers are still one of two sides not to pick up a point in the competition so far.

Central Sydney Wolves continually created chances in the first 30 minutes of the game but were unable to convert as Revesby Workers looked to create chances on the counterattack.

The first goal would come in the 39th minute of the game as Wolves Abdulraman Kamara found the back of the net to give his side a 1-0 advantage.

The game looked as if we would be heading into half time at 1-0, however it was Abdulraman Kamara who would find his second goal on the stroke of half time to give his side a 2-0 lead going into half time.

Revesby Workers looked to come out at halftime with energy in attack as they looked to mount a comeback in this game.

However, it was Wolves who would find the back of the net once again with their number 9, Vitor Fernandes da Guia finding the back of the net to make it 3-0 to Central Sydney Wolves.

Revesby Workers continued to push their attack with Central Sydney Wolves defending well and holding a lot of possession of the ball.

Central Sydney Wolves would seal the deal in the 90th minute of the match with Abdulraman Kamara scoring to make it a hattrick for himself and give his side a 4-0 win.

Revesby Workers sit in last position as they’re still without a point as Central Sydney Wolves move back up to 6th position sitting a point behind 4th place.

Padstow United 2-2 Greenacre Eagles                                                                             Reserve Grade Score: Padstow United 5-0 Greenacre Eagles

Padstow United and Greenacre Eagles could not be separated after some late drama meant the game would end in a 2-2 draw.

This game was very important for both sides as a win by either side would mean they could have potentially moved into the top 5 of the competition, which meant this fixture was full of high intensity and both sides giving 100% for the full 90 minutes.

It was Padstow United who have been deadly in front of goal all season who would score the first goal of the match through a goal by Josiah Newar in the 7th minute of the match.

With Greenacre Eagles on the back foot early, it would be their turn to try and find the leveller which came in the 19th minute through a goal by Taylor Saghbi.

The game would go into half time at 1-1 in a half full of a lot of intensity shown by both sides and a very end-to-end fixture with a lot of chances created at both ends.

In the second half it was Padstow United once again who would start off on the front foot as their striker John Martinez would give his side the advantage as his shot found the back of the net.

Greenacre looked as if they wouldn’t be able to break the Padstow United defence down until the 83rd minute when Greeancre’s Taylor Saghbi found the back of the net to give him a brace in the match and more importantly level the scores as the game ended 2-2.

Both sides sit 7th and 8th position on the ladder after round 6 with Padstow United ahead on goal difference as they both only sit 2 points behind 4th position as they will continue to look to move up on the ladder.

Yagoona Lions 3-1 Georges River Thistle                                                                           Reserve Grade Score: Yagoona Lions 3-0 Georges River Thistle

Yagoona Lions remain one point behind first place after a 3-0 victory against a Georges River Thistle who have been in red hot form.

Georges River Thistle’s 3-game win streak came to an end after a loss to Yagoona Lions where ill discipline played a massive factor in their loss.

This fixture was always going to be intense as it was a clash between 2nd and 4th on the competition ladder.

Georges River Thistle’s chances of winning this game would be damaged early after Sumathas Prasitsanpreecha was shown a second yellow card in the 10th minute of the match and he was sent from the field leaving Thistle with 10 men for the rest of the match.

With Thistle a man down, it did not take long before Yagoona Lions would get on the scoreboard as their main man up top, Jamie Bazevski found the back of the net to give the hosts a 1-goal advantage.

Jamie Bazevski would find the back of the net 8 minutes later to give himself a brace in this match and his side a 2-goal advantage.

Georges River Thistle’s day would get even worse as their number 8, Joshua Thomas would be shown a straight red card leaving their side with 9 players on the field for the rest of the match.

However, with 9-men on the field Georges River Thistle’s Mohamad Elzein would find the back of the net in the 43rd minute giving them a goal back going into half time.

The second half was dominated by Yagoona Lions as they aimed to make chances to try and put the game to bed, while Thistle aimed to find and equaliser on the counter.

Thistle’s hopes of a comeback would be shattered after Jamie Bazevski would complete his hattrick in the 87th minute of the match giving Yagoona a 3-1 victory.

Thistle now sits in 5th position as they will play this weekend without two of their main players, while Yagoona sit 2nd on the competition ladder 1-point behind Panania Diggers.

Panania Diggers 3-1 Bass Hill Rangers                                                                              Reserve Grade Score: Panania Diggers 2-0 Bass Hill Rangers

Panania Diggers kept their spot at the top of the competition ladder after a 3-1 victory over Bass Hill Rangers who are still looking for their first points of the season.

Panania Diggers are still undefeated to start the competition as they have won 5 games and had 1 draw to start the season.

Panania Diggers would start the game strongly as Joshua Adams would find the back of the net in the 3rd minute to give the home side a 1-0 advantage.

It did not take long before Panania would have their second goal as Lachlan Vella’s shot found the back of the net to give Panania an early 2-goal advantage in this game.

Bass Hill did not drop their heads after going two goals down early as they aimed to mount a comeback.

Bass Hill would find their goal late into the first half as Lee Fermor would score in the 38th minute to bring his side back into the match.

The game would go into half time with Panania leading 2-1.

Panania would re-establish their 2-goal advantage with Joshua Adams scoring his 2nd goal of the game in the 61st minute giving him his 6th goal in 6 matches.

With the game all but over, Bass Hill’s David Parets received a red card in the 86th minute leaving his side with 10 men for the final 5-minutes of the game.

Panania Diggers would win the game as they sit first on the competition ladder 1-point in front of Yagoona while Bass Hill sit 9th position, still without a point, however Bass Hill have looked strong in all their games.

UWPL Round 2 Review

Another Interesting weekend of football in our Umbro Women’s Premier League competition as this year’s competition looks like it could be anyone’s for the taking.

Our Match of the Round saw an East Bankstown Yellow low on troops defeated by a Revesby Workers White who get their first win of the season in a grand final rematch.

Elsewhere, East Bankstown Red go back-to-back as they narrowly defeated last year’s grand finalists Birrong Sports, while Georges River Thistle get their first win of the season as they eased past a Revesby Workers Maroon who were firing in round 1.

Match of the Round: East Bankstown Yellow 2-4 Revesby Workers White

Revesby White left it late as they defeated Easts Yellow 4-2 in a grand final rematch that could have gone either way.

Easts Yellow looked to be low on numbers coming into this game with 9 of their first team players available and one player needing to be borrowed from their All-Age Division 3 team, leaving them with 10 players for the game.

However, with only 9 players starting the game, it was Easts Yellow who would start the game on the front foot with their number 7, Kamley Ibrahim finding the back of the net in the 7th minute to give her side a 1-0 lead.

With Workers White on the back foot and a goal down it was their turn to push for an equaliser.

Workers White equaliser would come in the 16th minute of the game as it was now their number 7, Samantha Ponce who’s attempt on goal found it’s way into the back of the net to draw the game all square.

With the game all square, and both sides looking to play a strong attacking brand of football, the game felt as if it wouldn’t take long before we would see another goal in this game.

Come of the 27th minute of the game, Easts Yellow would have their breakthrough goal when through a corner by Jessica Casagrande which Workers keeper Louise Cousins attempted to save before it hit her hand and fell into the net.

In an extremely end to end game with both teams showing off their fire power in attack, there would be one more turn in the tail of an exciting first half as Revesby’s young attacker Karen Bennett would get her team a goal in the 38th minute to lock both sides up at 2-2 going into halftime.

Easts Yellow would have another second half where fatigue would become an issue as the one female disadvantage would prove to be costly.

Although both teams looked to create chances as they pushed to find the winner, it wouldn’t be till the 70th minute where Workers Samantha Ponce would get her brace to give her side a 3-2 lead.

Easts Yellow would continue to push for an equaliser; however, Workers Danielle Merlino would find the back of the net to make the score 4-2 and end East’s hope of a comeback.

Revesby White first win of the season takes themselves up to 2nd place in the competition as they remain undefeated, while Easts Yellow are still without a point this season as they sit in 6th spot.

East Bankstown Red 1-0 Birrong Sports

East Bankstown Red have won back-to-back games to start their season as they defeated Birrong Sports 1-0 in a game where defence looked to be key.

Easts Red looked to have the same problems as Easts Yellow with only 9 of their first team players available for the game with one player being borrowed from their All-Age Ladies Division 3 team to bring their total players to ten for the game.

Easts Red looked to be strong in defence early with a player disadvantage as Birrong looked to create chances early.

With Easts Red defending well early, it would be their side who would find the first and only goal in the match in the 31st minute of the match with their number 2, Samarah Bayrouti finding the back of the net to give her side a 1-0 advantage.

The sides would go into halftime with Easts Red having the advantage.

With a player down and a goal advantage, Easts Red looked to come out at halftime to defend their 1-goal advantage.

The second half it was Birrong who created the better of the chances but were unable to convert as Easts defend well but continued to create chances as they looked to get a 2-goal advantage to give themselves some breathing room.

The game would end 1-0 to Easts Red giving them their second win back-to-back as they lead the competition.

Revesby Workers Maroon 1-7 Georges River Thistle

Revesby Maroon had a dream start to their season in round 1, however, they struggled against the 2022 champions Georges River Thistle as Thistle won the game 7-1 after an influx of their 2022 players joined the team after round 1.

After a shock first round loss to Easts Red, it was Thistle who hit the ground running in this match with their number 6, Monica Nolevski scoring the first goal of the match to give Thistle a 1-0 advantage in the 11th minute of the match.

Georges River Thistle would double their lead in the 23rd minute of the match when Hayley Stone found the back of the net to make it 2-0.

Jorja Murray, who scored 4 goals in this fixture last year, would find the back of the net in the 27th minute to make it 3-0 with Thistle’s number 7 Brooke Williams hitting the back of the net 9 minutes later to make it 4-0 going into halftime.

With Revesby Maroon struggling in the first half, they would have a challenge in the next 45 minutes to get back into this match.

Thistle would start the second half as they ended the first as Jorja Murray would get her second goal in the 53rd minute giving Thistle a 5-0 lead.

Thistle’s number 3, Courtney Mcgee would score their sixth goal in the 57th minute.

Revesby Maroon would finally net their first goal of the game in the 67th minute through a goal by Marissa Tsimboukis bringing their score back to 6-1 before Thistle’s prolific goalscorer, Candice Prain played her first game of the season as she scored in the 80th minute with the game ending 7-1 to Thistle.

Previous Meeting: Bankstown Sports Strikers 0-1 Padstow Hornets

This week’s match of the round sees Padstow Hornets and Bankstown Sports Strikers meet for the first time since their 2022 grand Final which makes this game a grand final rematch!

Padstow Hornets won last year’s grand final 1-0 in a thrilling match which will have Bankstown Sports Strikers hungry for revenge.

Bankstown Sports Strikers have not had their dream start to their season as they sit 5th on the competition ladder. However, under the guidance of Ali Hassan, Strikers will be looking to climb up the ladder in the weeks to come.

Both these sides have been very strong defensively and have only conceded 3 goals in their opening fixtures, so we expect this game to be won on defence.

Padstow Hornets have only been able to score 8 goals in their opening 5 fixtures after being the highest scoring team in the 2022 competition.

Padstow Hornets will look to their attacker Mike Cklamovski and Neil Philippou to make more attacking chances if they are to find the back of the net against a strong Bankstown Sports Strikers defence.

This match will be one you won’t want to miss out on as both squads will look to be firing in their first meeting since last year’s grand final.

Both of Padstow United’s attackers have been the inform strikers of the competition with Padstow United having scored the most goals in the competition so far.

Greenacre Eagles defence will need to be switched on if they are to hold out a Padstow United attack that has been firing in front of goal this season.

Greenacre Eagles will look to positive momentum, with back-to-back wins in their last 2 games as they hope to climb towards the upper half of the table.

Greenacre Eagles number 9 Alam Dabel has scored four goals in their last two wins, including a hattrick against Central Sydney Wolves in their catch-up fixture. Greenacre will be looking to Dabel once again this week if they are to continue to score goals and find their third win in a row.

Yagoona Lions have been strong in front of goal to start of the competition with their attackers Jamie Bazevski and Joshua Briskoski consistently finding the back of the net in their opening 5 matches.

Yagoona Lions will also look to their young winger Adrian Ristevski to get on the scoresheet in this fixture after he netted a hattrick in this fixture last season.

However, Yagoona Lions will be looking for an improved defensive effort in this fixture as they have conceded 11 goals in 5 matches which is the third most in the competition.

If Yagoona are to stay towards the top end of the ladder they will need to be better defensively.

Georges River Thistle have turned their season around after losing their opening two matches as they sit in 4th position on the ladder coming into round 6 of the competition.

The reason for Georges River Thistle’s massive turn around has been their defence which has only conceded one goal in their last three fixtures.

If Thistle are to continue their winning ways, they will need to be strong in defence against a Yagoona Lions team that can’t stop scoring.

Expect this fixture to be intense for the full 90 minutes as both sides look for a vital 3-points in a top four clash.

In attack, Panania have looked strong with their striker Nicholas Vertsonis starting to find the back of the net more consistently.

With strength in both their attack and defence, Panania Diggers will feel confident that they can win this game.

Bass Hill Rangers are still without a point in the competition, and they will be keen to turn their season around as they play top of the table Panania Diggers.

Although they are without a point this season, Bass Hill have looked to be competitive in all their fixtures.

If Bass Hill are to start to get to winning ways, they will need to see an improvement in their attack as they have only been able to score 2 goals in their opening 5 matches, which is the lowest in the competition.

With both sides sitting at opposite ends of the competition ladder as well as both sides needing the three-points for different reasons, expect this match to be exciting with both sides strong for the full 90 minutes.

UWPL Round 1 Review

What an exciting start to our Umbro Women’s Premier League competition as we saw three thrilling games as teams look to find their feet in the competition.

Our Match of the Round saw heavyweights Georges River Thistle defeated by East Bankstown red.

Elsewhere, Birrong Sports and Revesby Workers White couldn’t be separated, while Revesby Workers Maroon defeated East Bankstown Yellow.

Revesby Workers White 1-1 Birrong Sports

Revesby Workers White and Birrong sports couldn’t be separated as they split the points after the game ended as a 1-1 draw.

Although Revesby Workers White made the step up to the Bankstown’s top ladies competition in 2023, they looked to be a side that may be an underdog in the competition this year as they split the points with 2022 Grand Finalists Birrong Sports.

The game looked very tightly contested in the first half as the Workers looked to have the better of the chances, however, it looked like we would go into the half time at 0-0 before the Workers struck late into the half.

In the 41st minute of the match, Revesby Workers White number 11, Karen Bennett found the back of the net to give her side a 1-0 advantage going into half time.

It wasn’t until the 62nd minute of the match when Birrong Sports Cailtan Last found herself with a chance to score as she found the back of Louise Cousins goal to bring her side back into the match as the scores evened up to 1-1.

Both sides looked to create chances at both ends as they looked to find the winner, however, they both failed to find the back of the net with Birrong and Revesby splitting the points in round 1.

East Bankstown Yellow 1-8 Revesby Workers Maroon

Revesby Workers Maroon defeated newly promoted East Bankstown Yellow 8-1 in a tale of two halves as easts young squad looked to lack experience as they find their feet in the UWPL competition.

The first half saw the Workers dominate possession with a lot of the ball however they struggled to create cut chances due to a focused East Bankstown’s defence.

East Bankstown’s goalkeeper Ella Mitchell looked strong as she made important saves to keep her side in the game and it looked the scores would go into halftime level at 0-0 before the Workers Marissa Tsimboukis found the back of the net to make it 1-0 going into half time.

The second half Revesby Workers came out firing as East Bankstown began to look fatigued and it was in the 56th minute when Revesby Workers attacker Mya Donnelly gave her side 2-0 advantage.

It didn’t take long before the Workers attacker Marianna Konidaris made it 3-0 in the 60th minute followed by Konidaris making it a brace for herself in the 67th minute of the match and making it 4-0 to the workers.

Revesby Workers continued to make chances for themselves as Donnelly found her own brace in the 73rd minute of the match followed by her hattrick in the 87th minute.

East Bankstown would score a consolation goal in the 90th minute of the match as Kamley Ibrahim found the back of the net.

However, Workers Mya Donnelly would score her 4th goal of the match in injury time before Marianna Konidaris made it a hattrick for herself a minute later to make it a 8-1 victory to Revesby Workers.

Thistle continued to apply pressure throughout the half but were unable to extend their lead as they went into half time 3-0 up.

The second half saw the same dominant display by Georges River Thistle; however, it would be Revesby Workers who scored first in the second half through a goal by their striker Ashtun Letele in the 56th minute of the match which looked to give Revesby confidence that they could still make a comeback.

However, Thistle would find two goals late through their number 9 Mathew Tahere in the 75th and 81st minute to seal a 5-1 victory to Thistle after a dominant display as Revesby Workers continue to try and find their first points of the season.

Central Sydney Wolves 1-1 Padstow Hornets                                                                            Reserve Grade Score: Central Sydney Wolves 2-0 Padstow Hornets

Central Sydney Wolves split the points with Padstow Hornets in a 1-1 draw where Central Sydney Wolves dominated and Padstow Hornets went down to 10 men for the final 30 minutes of the match.

However, after a lot of attacking pressure by Central Sydney Wolves, the Hornets defence were able to hold them out meaning the game would end in a 1-1 draw.

BDAFA Umbro Women’s Premier League 2023 Season Preview

The 2023 BDAFA Umbro Women’s Premier League season is shaping up to be one of the best to date as female football continues to grow and develop across the world and especially in Bankstown!

This year we will see two new teams join our Umbro Women’s Premier League competition as our competition extends to 6 teams with all teams eyes set on being crowned as champions in 2023.

Lets check out how each team will be gearing up for the year with round 1 commencing this weekend.

Birrong Sports
Last Season AAL Div1: 3rd Place (Runners-up in finals)

Runners-up of the competition in 2022, Birrong will enter the competition disappointed from their defeat at the hands of Thistle in the Grand Final of the 2022 competition.

Birrong will look to build on momentum from a fantastic finals run in 2022 as they came from third position to make the grand final.

The return of Erin Celarc and Alley Besara will provide extra depth to their defence, while their midfield has taken a hit from 2022 as last year’s captain Natasha Pocovi as well as Juliana Dundonovic and Tori Preddy will be out for an extended period. They have also lost Haylee Ingle who has hung up the boots.

With so many experience players out for their side, they will look to strengths out wide in Emily McGrath who was the Bronze Medal winner in the competition for 2022 who will look to provide service to their to Emma Pavez who they will look to in front of goal this season. Their own goal will be well protected this year once again with Lauren Croucher as their experienced shot stopper.

Head coach Andrew Baker is excited for the season and its new challenges.

“It will be a tough year for us but we do look forward to the challenge. We have lost a lot of experience, however, I am excited for the younger players in the squad, especially the Mcnair sisters, to step up and become a force in this competition.”

“We showed towards the end of the last season what a tight knit group we are and hopefully that spirit continues.”

Birrong will look to start of the season strong in round 1 as they welcome Revesby Workers white to the competition.

East Bankstown Red
Last Season AAL Div1: 4th Place

Perennial semi-finalists East Bankstown Red are looking to improve on last year’s narrow semi-final loss to Birrong Sports.

Games against the top 4 sides in last year’s fixtures were decided by a single goal so Easts’ fingers are crossed that the bounce of the ball will go their way this year as they look for a top four finish to be competing in the finals series at the end of the year.

The Kookas have retained most of their 2022 squad with the exception of skilful midfielder Sihaem Saade and Alex DeWildt. However, this has been offset by the return to the team of former players and a couple of very promising acquisitions looking to make their team even more of a threat in 2023.

Easts strong defence led by Michaela Perugini and Patricia Mallios will look to continue to cause problems for their oppositions attack, while at the other end of the park, former golden boot winner and captain Chiara Nohra will look to be a constant threat in front of goal accompanied by Tara Edmiston who provides goals from midfield.

Easts coaching staff are confident their quality across the park will lead to a successful 2023 campaign, with coach Chris Millar eagerly excited for their derby against East Bankstown Yellow which could prove to be a season highlight.

East Bankstown Red will need to do it tough in round 1 as they take on 2022 champions Georges River Thistle in round 1 at Padstow Park.

East Bankstown Yellow
Last Season AAL Div2: 2nd Place (Runners-up in Finals)

East Bankstown Yellow are one of two teams to join our most our most prestigious women’s competition. Easts Yellow make the move up from the All-Age Ladies Division 2 competition having been narrowly defeated in the grand final to Revesby Workers White who will also join the UWPL competition for 2023.

Their coach Ivan Silvera will take charge of the side this year once again having been with the ladies’ side for several years now and has developed them to play a good brand of football with their passing game being one of their core pillars in recent success.

Although majority of this side are relatively young in their late teens, this could be seen as one of their biggest strengths as they have a very fast and athletic side with the ability to play an up style tempo of football for long periods of the game. Although, without many experience players, they may lack the maturity and mental toughness in their first season in WPL, something they will need to make up for with plenty of enthusiasm.

East Yellow will look to their captain, 19-year-old Amani Adra, who will look to lead their team with her presence on the field. Goalkeeper Ella Mitchell will be key to the Easts defence with her fearless approach to goalkeeping and great communication to her backline.

Coach Ivan Silvera is looking forward to the challenge of playing this season for the first time ever in the UWPL in the Bankstown District.

“After losing in the Grand Final last season in 2022, we are hoping to be competitive in all our games against seasoned UWPL teams.”

East Bankstown Yellow will start their season off against one of the more experienced UWPL teams Revesby Workers Maroon as they look to start their season off on the strong foot.

Georges River Thistle
Last Season AAL Div1: 1st Place (Champions)

Georges River Thistle will have a massive target on their backs in the 2023 competition as they look forward to a 2023 competition off the back of a club record in 2022, winning the minor premiership and grand final for the first time in the club’s history.

Thistle look to be a new team on paper with seven players from their grand final winning team moving on in the offseason as well as duel coach James Kermond heading to Macarthur Rams NPL.

The loss of several players and one of their coaches will bring a new challenge to the champion side. However, the team’s established and new players look to have gelled quite well through training and trial matches.

One of Thistle’s biggest strengths in their 2022 campaign was that goal could come from players all over the pitch highlighting their quality all over the pitch. However, it will be their defence that will be a focal point for the season as only one player remains from their defence in 2022 as they welcome new defensive players and a new goalkeeper to arguably the best defence of the 2022 competition that conceded only 10 goals.

Thistle coach Peter Fowler is excited for the new challenge in 2023 and hope’s to achieve his side’s goals.

“The squad’s aim is to build steadily to a top four finish and to get past the first round in the sapphire cup in 2023.’

Georges River Thistle will take on East Bankstown Red in their first round at Padstow Park as they look to build on momentum from 2022 and take home the three points.

Revesby Workers Maroon
Last Season AAL Div1: 2nd Place

This year will be a redemption year for Revesby Workers Maroon as they were surprisingly knocked out of the 2022 finals by Birrong Sports and were unable to make the Grand Final.

Revesby Workers Maroon look to have a mix of youth and experience in their team which could be a massive pillar for their success in 2023.

Revesby Workers Maroon are known for their threats going forward as they scored the most goals in the competition in 2022 hitting the back of the net 59 times.

Revesby Workers will also see Olivia Lambkin line up in 2023 who was the silver medallist winner of 2022 and important part of their success.

Revesby Workers coaching staff is hungry for redemption in the 2023 season.

“We went through some significant challenges last season and we are ready to come back firing in 2023.”

“Our aim is to play some good quality football for the entire season and put ourselves back in the hunt for the premiership.”

Revesby Workers Maroon will look to claim all three points in their first game for the season as they welcome East Bankstown Yellow to the competition.

Revesby Workers White
Last Season AAL Div2: 1st Place (Champions)

After a fantastic year in the All Age Ladies Division 2 competition, Revesby Workers White will be our second ladies team to move up into the Umbro Women’s Premier League Competition this year!

Revesby Workers White were crowned champions in the All-Age Ladies Division 2 competition last season after they defeated East Bankstown Yellow 3-0 in the Grand Final.

Although they will be competing in a much tougher competition, Workers are confident that they can make the step up and perform week on week against the top ladies sides.

In 2023, they will see their captain and infamous shot stopper Louise Cousins playing for them once again after she led them to be crowned champions in their 2022 season. Louise, with the help of her strong defence conceded the least number of goals in the division 2 competition and they will be key to their success in 2023.

Not only a great defensive side, they also scored the most goals in the division 2 competition and they will need to be clinical in front of goal as their objective is to be in the top four teams to be playing finals in 2023.

Revesby Workers White will host 2022 Division 1 finalists Birrong Sports with the hope of starting off their season with three points.

Match of the Round: Bankstown Sports Strikers vs Padstow United, 8:30pm @ Padstow Park

Previous Meeting: Bankstown Sports Strikers 1-0 Padstow United – Rd2, 2022

Bankstown Sports Strikers are in search of an important three points this weekend as they take on Padstow United coming off a massive 13-2 victory against Revesby Workers.

The last time these two sides met was in a catch-up game in 2022 where Bankstown Sports Strikers would come away with a 1-0 victory after a decisive goal by strikers number 9 Esoghume Dominic.

Bankstown Sports Strikers were upset in last week’s games against CSW which will have them even more determined to get the three points this weekend.

They would will look to have a strong defence against a side who has been firing in front of goal this season with 19 goals in 4 games.

However, Padstow United have conceded 10 goals in their opening 4 games which will be something Bankstown Sports Strikers will look to exploit.

Padstow United are coming off a big victory in round 4 against Revesby Workers.

Both Padstow United’s attackers John Martinez and Rafa Coutinho picked up 6 goals each in last weekend’s match against Revesby Workers and they will need to be firing again as they look to get the win against strong opposition.

With both 2022 finalists looking to stay up around the top 5 of the table, we expect this weeks match of the round to go down to the wire.

Saturday 1st of April 2023

Greenacre Eagles vs Bass Hill Rangers, 4pm @ Allum Park

Previous Meeting: Greenacre Eagles 6-1 Bass Hill Rangers – Round 10, 2021

Greenacre Eagles will take on Bass Hill Rangers at their home ground Allum Park as this looks to be another massive fixture as both sides look for their first points of the season.

The last time these two sides met was in round 10 of the 2021 campaign where Greenacre Eagles ran over Bass Hill in a 6-1 win.

Greenacre performed well against our current leader in Yagoona Lions last weekend, however a late charge by Yagoona Lions saw Greenacre lose 5-1.

Greenacre will look to improve on their defence if they’re to get the three points this weekend.

Bass Hill also went down last week to Georges River Thistle after conceding twice in the last 10 minutes of the match to lose 2-0.

Bass Hill have gone into halftime at 0-0 for 4 straight weeks, the question is, will there be a goal in the first half of this match?

I can promise you one thing, with both sides eager to put points on the board, both sides will come out with a lot of energy, grit and determination to get the three points this weekend.

Panania Diggers vs Yagoona Lions, 4pm @ Kelso South

Previous Meeting: Panania Diggers 0-1 Yagoona Lions – Rd 20, 2022

Panania Diggers will host Yagoona Lions in a top of the table clash as both sides are undefeated heading into round 5 with Yagoona Lions sitting two points clear of Panania Diggers.

The last time these two sides met was in round 20 of 2022 where Yagoona were able to hold out Panania Diggers to win the match 1-0.

Panania Diggers have had one of the best defences to start off the competition having only conceded 2 goals in their opening 4 matches. Panania Goalkeeper Logan Hession and defenders Josh Bull, Douglas Nabaki, Anthony Di Lucchio and James Dedousis will need to be strong if they are to hold out Yagoona’s firing attack.

Yagoona’s attackers Jamie Bazevski, Joshua Briskoski and Adrian Ristevski have been the focal point for Yagoona’s strong start to the season. If they are to get the three points this weekend, they will need all three firing in front of goal.

However, Yagoona will be hoping to improve on their defence If they’re to stay towards the top of the table this season.

With this being a top of the table clash, and a battle between one of the best attacks and defences in the league, I can promise you, this is a game you will not want to miss.

Revesby Workers vs Georges River Thistle, 4pm @ Marco Reserve

Previous Meeting: Georges River Thistle 0-6 Revesby Workers – Rd 22, 2022

A struggling Revesby Workers will play at home against a Georges River Thistle looking to go back-to-back-to-back.

The last time these two sides met was in Round 22 of the 2022 season where Revesby Workers absolutely dominated the game and won 6-0. Revesby Workers will need to do it tough to get a scoreline like this again.

Revesby Workers have struggled so far with keeping the ball out of their own net conceding 30 goals in their opening 4 games. If they’re to be competitive in this match, they will need to be more structured defensively.

However, Revesby Workers have proven they can score goals this season hitting the back of the net in all of their games and they will need to be clinical in front of goal to find their first points of the season.

After a slow start to the season, Georges River Thistle have picked up back-to-back wins in their last two games.

After conceding 7 goals in their opening 2 games, Georges River Thistle have switched on defensively and kept 2 clean sheets in their last 2 games. Their defensive has ultimately been focal to the turnaround in their results and will be important if they’re to make it three wins in a row this weekend.

With both sides having something to play for this weekend, we expect this game to have high intensity for the full 90 minutes in a game that will be won through each sides defence.

Central Sydney Wolves vs Padstow Hornets, 6:15pm @ Lockwood Park

Previous Meeting: Central Sydney Wolves 0-25 Padstow Hornets

Central Sydney Wolves will take on Padstow Hornets at Lockwood Park in a game where both sides have an opportunity to climb the ladder with three points.

The last time these two sides met Padstow Hornets absolutely embarrassed Central Sydney Wolves in a 25-0 victory. Central Sydney Wolves will be eager to get a result in this game to show their improvement in 2023.

Central Sydney Wolves picked up a massive 1-0 win against Bankstown Sports Strikers in last weekends game.

Central Sydney Wolves defence has been strong to start the season, however, they will looking to score more of their chances going forward if they are to beat a Padstow defence that has only conceded 2 goals in 4 games.

Padstow Hornets have been very strong to start the season as they continue their undefeated run.

However they will be disappointed to have drawn two games in their opening four matches and will see this fixture as a must win game.

Padstow Hornets struggled to create chances in their round 4 fixture against Panania Diggers and they will need to be better across the pitch to create  more chances and beat a strong Central Sydney Wolves defence.

This looks to be an exciting game to end round 5 where the result could go either way.

BUPL Round 4 Review

Round four was a round with some interesting results with one team moving clear on top of the ladder.

The match of the round saw Padstow Hornets and Panania Diggers end in a stalemate.

Georges River Thistle continued their good run of form as they defeated Bass Hill Rangers, while Padstow United claimed all three points against Revesby Workers.

Yagoona Lions worked their way to a victory against Greenacre Eagles, as late drama saw Central Sydney Wolves upset Bankstown Sports Strikers.

Match of the Round: Padstow Hornets 0-0 Panania Diggers                                           Reserve Grade Score: Padstow Hornets 0-1 Panania Diggers

The match of the round saw Padstow Hornets and Panania Diggers split the points in what was an exciting affair.

With both sides starting off their season unbeaten coming into round four, both sides started strong as they both aimed to continue their unbeaten runs.

This would look to be a difficult match on paper for Padstow Hornets as they were without their in-form attacker Mike Cklamovski this fixture who had scored most of their goals in their first three rounds.

Panania looked very strong early into the game with most of the possession and creating numerous chances going forward with Padstow Hornets defence holding up strong.

The first big chance would come Panania’s way late into the first half when they were awarded a corner kick. The ball was floated into the box with a clearing header coming from the Hornet’s defence. The ball fell to Panania’s Josh Bull who would strike a volley with his left foot from the edge of the box which struck the crossbar and flew over the goal.

Both sides went into halftime locked up at 0-0.

The next big chance of the game came Panania’s way once again as their striker, Nicholas Vertsonis found himself through on goal as he aimed to chip the goalkeeper with his shot missing to the left of the post.

In the 70th minute, Panania’s Josh Bull found himself once again with a chance to score as the ball fell to him on the penalty spot from a corner before his shot went straight Padstow Hornets Goalkeeper Mitchell Ashley.

Moments later one of Padstow Hornets midfielders made space for himself on the edge of the box with his right-footed shot drilled to the top right corner which was saved spectacularly by Panania’s Logan Hession.

The game would not see another big chance created with the score ending 0-0.

Although we did not see any goals in this match, it was definitely an exciting affair highlighted by some outstanding defence and spectacular keeping by both sides.

Georges River Thistle 2-0 Bass Hill Rangers                                                                Reserve Grade score: Georges River Thistle 1-2 Bass Hill Rangers

Georges River Thistle were able to claim all three points against Bass Hill Rangers as Thistle continue some good form as they win back-to-back games after a poor start to the season, while Bass Hill are still looking for their first points of the season despite playing well in all their games.

The games were extremely end-to end in the first half with decent chances coming to both sides with both sides goalkeeper proving to be very important in the first half of the game.

Bass Hill would continue an incredible run of all their opening four games going into half-time at 0-0 with this game proving to be no different.

In the second half both sides would continue to look for the winning goal with Bass Hill looking the more likely.

However, in the 80th minute of the match, Thistle’s number 30, Rocco Domine looked to have scored the winner as his shot found the back of the net.

Bass Hill wouldn’t give up as they pushed to find the equalizer in the last 10 minutes of the match. However, their hopes of finding an equalizer would be lost as Thistle found a counter attack before Prakasit scored in the 89th minute to give his side a 2-0 advantage and seal the three points.

A well fought match by both sides with late drama giving Georges River Thistle the win.

Padstow United 13-2 Revesby Workers                                                                          Reserve Grade Score: Padstow United 2-0 Revesby Workers

Padstow United ultimately dominated Revesby Workers with a 13-2 victory which was a very disappointing game for Revesby Workers as they are in a rebuild year with many injuries to their line-up.

Revesby Workers opened the score early with a goal in the 1st minute by Daniel Carr to surprisingly give Revesby a 1-0 advantage.

However, it wouldn’t take too long before United attacker John Martinez would score in the 6th minute to make the game 1-1, followed by a 9th minute goal by Josiah Newar to make it 2-1 and give Padstow United the advantage.

Padstow attacker Rafa Coutinho would score in the 17th and 40th minute to make it 4-1 to United with a goal on the stroke of halftime by Bojan Hadzic to make it 4-2 going into halftime.

The second half would be very one-sided with Padstow United scoring nine goals.

Rafa Coutinho would score 4 goals in the second half which saw him with 6 goals in the game, while John Martinez would score 5 goals in the second half which saw him also score 6 goals in the game.

The game would end 13-2 to Padstow United which was a very positive result for them as they picked up their first win of the season.

We hope to see Revesby Workers not drop their heads as they continue to search for their first points in 2023.

Greenacre Eagles 2-5 Yagoona Lions                                                                               Reserve Grade Score: Greenacre Eagles 0-3 Yagoona Lions

Yagoona Lions claimed the three points against Yagoona lions as they made it 4-in-a-row and now sit clear at the top of the table as Greenacre Eagles are still in search for their first points of the season.

It was an exciting encounter with lots of goals as Yagoona found the first goal of the game in the 28th minute as Greenacre Eagles Billy Nunes turned the ball into his own net to give Yagoona Lions a 1-0 advantage.

Moments later, Yagoona’s Adrian Ristevski fired a ball into the area which found Ahmed Abdellatef at the back post who easily found the back of the net to give his side a 2-0 advantage.

However, Greenacre Eagles did not drop their heads as they were in search of a goal and in the 43rd minute of the match they were awarded a penalty which their number 7 Ismail Hadlife converted the penalty to make it 2-1 going into half time.

Greenacre Eagles would continue their attacking momentum into the second half as they were able to lock the scores up in the 53rd minute through a goal by Taylor Saghabi.

With the scores level and both sides looking to find a winner, both sides started to create multiple chances in front of goal with Yagoona having the better of the chances.

In the 58th minute of the match Yagoona would find themselves back in front as their number 10, Nick Cvetkosvki curled his effort into the back of the net to give his side the advantage once again.

It wouldn’t be too long before Yagoona’s Adrian Ristevski found his side 4th goal in the 73rd minute before their number 9 Joshua Briskoski made it 5 in the 81st minute.

The game would end 5-2 with Yagoona Lions taking home the three points after a great performance by both sides with Yagoona being the better team on the day.

Bankstown Sports Strikers 0-1 Central Sydney Wolves                                                   Reserve Grade Score: Bankstown Sports Strikers 4-0 Central Sydney Wolves

Central Sydney Wolves proved that they have turned their season around from 2022 as they upset Bankstown Sports Strikers in a 1-0 win.

In this previous fixture last year, Bankstown Sports Strikers won the game 16-1, so this was a tremendous effort by Central Sydney Wolves to get the win.

The first half looked to be all Central Sydney Wolves as they applied to a lot of pressure to Bankstown Sports Strikers back line, however, the Strikers were able to hold out the pressure to keep the scores locked up at half time.

With the scores level at halftime and the Strikers not showing their best so far in this fixture, they looked to come out firing in the second half.

The strikers looked to control the game in the second half and create numerous chances which they were unable to convert and it was just a matter of when they would find the winner.

Match of the Round: Padstow Hornets vs Panania Diggers, 8:30pm @ Padstow Park

Previous Meeting: Panania Diggers 0-6 Padstow Hornets – Round 22, 2022

Padstow Hornets will play against Panania Diggers at Padstow Park which will be a top of the table clash as Panania Diggers sit in 1st position and Padstow Hornets sit in 3rd.

The last time these two sides met was in round 22 of last year’s competition where Padstow Hornets were able to dominate the fixture and come away with a 6-0 victory.

In last year’s round 22 fixture, both Michael Cklamovski and Neil Philippou scored braces. With Cklamovski having scored 5 goals in his last 2 games he will be looking a threat in this match up. Neil Philippou has not scored in the 2023 competition, however with his goal scoring form against Panania Diggers in previous fixtures, he will be looking to score in this round. Both players will definitely look to be dangers in front of goal.

Padstow Hornet’s defence has also proved to be very strong to start off the year having kept a clean sheet in round 3 against Bass Hill Rangers. Padstow Hornet’s had the best defence in the 2022 season conceding 16 goals in 20 matches. They will need to be structured and focused defensively to keep out a strong attacking team like Panania Diggers.

Panania Diggers have proved to be one of the title contenders for the 2023 season with three straight victories to start the season.

However, round 3 will be there toughest challenge so far facing the 2022 champions who are undefeated in 2023 and sit only 2-points behind them on the ladder.

Panania were relentless in their 5-1 victory over Revesby Workers in round 3 having scored 5 goals in the first half. However, Panania will need to be more clinical Infront of goal as they were unable to convert a lot of their chances.

Panania attackers Nicholas Vertsonis and Joshua Adams have been prolific with both having scored 4 goals in their opening 3 matches. They will look to be Panania’s danger men up top in round 4.

With both sides looking stay towards the top of the table in the opening rounds, you can expect this match-up at Padstow Park to be a blockbuster.

Georges River Thistle vs Bass Hill Rangers, 3pm @ Coleman Park

Previous Meeting: Bass Hill Rangers 2-3 Georges River Thistle – Round 9, 2021

Georges River Thistle play at home once again as they take on Bass Hill Rangers on a mission to get their first points of the season.

The last time these two sides met was in round 9 of 2021 as Georges River Thistle won the match 3-2 in a year that Bass Hill Rangers struggled for points.

Georges River Thistle proved in round 3 after defeating Central Sydney Wolves 2-0 in a game where they were able to score 2 goals in the opening 25 minutes and then focus defensively to hold out the Wolves relentless waves of attack.

After a tough start to the season playing losing to two strong opposition in Panania Diggers and Padstow Hornets, a lot of people would have counted out the Thistle this season.

However, Georges River Thistle have proved they are a strong team in 2023 and will take a lot of momentum into this round 4 fixture.

Bass Hill have also had a difficult start to their season having played three 2022 finalists in their opening three fixtures.

Bass Hill have been unable to claim points this season and they will be coming into round 4 determined to put points on the board.

The rangers have only scored 2 goal so far this season and will need to create more chances in their attacking half if they are to get an important win over the Thistle in round 4.

With two teams looking for a much-needed win in round 4, we will definitely see both these sides look to come out firing.

Greenacre Eagles vs Yagoona Lions, 4pm @ Allum Park

Previous Meeting: Greenacre Eagles 0-2 Yagoona Lions – Finals Series 2022

Greenacre Eagles will host Yagoona Lions in round 4 with Yagoona Lions eager to continue their winning streak to start the season.

The last time these two sides met was in the first week of the 2022 Finals series where Yagoona were able to knock out Greenacre to progress to the second week of the finals series.

With this previous result in mind, Greenacre will be eager to win this match to end Yagoona’s winning streak and get revenge for last season.

Greenacre have not had the greatest start to their 2023 season having lost to Panania Diggers in round 2 after dominating for most of the game and creating great attacking chances which they were unable to convert.

Greenacre were also knocked out of Australia Cup on Tuesday night after a 2-1 loss to Phoenix FC.

With results not going Greenacre’s way, one thing is for certain, they will be looking to make amends for a poor start to 2023 with a win in round 4 over Yagoona Lions.

On the other hand, Yagoona Lions have started their season off in fantastic fashion.

Yagoona lions have been firing in front of goal with 11 goals scored in their first three games. With Jamie Bazevski scoring 6 of their 11 goals, they will be looking to him to continue to find the back of the net.

Although Yagoona Lions attack has been very strong, they will need to improve their defence as they have struggled to hold sides out and have conceded 7 gaols in their opening three matches.

With both sides eager to win for different reasons, you can expect a very attacking minded game that will go down to the wire.

Padstow United vs Revesby Workers, 4pm @ Playford Park

Previous Meeting: Padstow United 2-1 Revesby Workers – Round 20, 2022

Padstow United will play at their home ground for the first time this season as they take on Revesby Workers who will be determined to get their first points for the season.

Padstow United defeated Revesby Workers 2-1 in their last game of the 2022 competition season in a game which ultimately confirmed Revesby Workers would miss out on a finals spot in 2022.

Padstow United have not had their dream start to 2023 as they have only picked up 2 points in the opening 3 games and have not been able to claim victory in any of their matches.

Padstow United have struggled to hold a lead after scoring first in their opening 3 matches and they would look to be more disciplined in defense after scoring if they are to pick up a valuable 3-points in round 4.

Revesby Workers have had a tough start to the season playing three of the top four teams on the competition table.

Revesby have struggled defence conceding 17 goals in their opening three fixtures and it will not look any easier in round 4 as Padstow United are known for their quality in attack.

However, Revesby Workers will be eager to get the three points this weekend and will need a lot of focus and determination to get over a strong outfit in Padstow United.

With both sides looking for their first win of the season, expect both sides to come into this match willing to fight to the end to get a must need win to turned their poor starts to the season around.

Bankstown Sports Strikers vs Central Sydney Wolves, 8:30pm @ Padstow Park

Previous Meeting: Bankstown Sports Strikers 16-1 Central Sydney Wolves – Round 16, 2022

Bankstown Sports Strikers will take on Central Sydney Wolves at Padstow Park as the final match of the round.

The last time these sides met was in round 16 of 2022 when Bankstown Sports Strikers completely destroyed Central Sydney Wolves, a scoreline the Wolves will be looking to make up for in 2023.

Bankstown Sports Strikers started strong in their opening two rounds of the season as they were firing in attack and strong in defence.

Central Sydney Wolves will need to keep a close eye on Strikers number 9, Robson De Souza who has looked to be in good form to start his season as he scored 5 goals against Revesby Workers in round 2.

The strikers unfortunately lost their Australia cup game on Tuesday Night against Avoca F.C. and will be keen to get back to winning ways.

Central Sydney Wolves have looked much stronger in their 2023 season, however, have still been unable to find a win in their opening two matches.

Central Sydney Wolves captain, Saed Al-Zebdeh, will be very determined to lead his side to a victory as he plays his former side Bankstown Sports Strikers.

With the added incentive of making amends for their previous defeat against Bankstown Sports Strikers in 2022, the Wolves will certainly be ready for this challenge.

With two team hungry for a win this weekend, we are certain our final game of round 4 will not disappoint.

After a difficult start for Bass Hill Rangers for 2023 taking on two finalists from the 2022 finals, it did not get easier for them as they lost 2-0 to the 2022 champions, Padstow Hornets.

Padstow Hornets, having conceded first in their opening 2 matches, looked to open the game well creating a few attacking opportunities whilst staying solid at the back and not allowing Bass Hill many chances at goal.
