Umbro BPL Round 5 Preview

The Umbro Bankstown Premier League Previews make a return for Round 5 of the 2024 Season in preparation for an action-packed weekend of football.

Our Match of the Round sees Padstow United and Central Sydney Wolves go head-to-head at Padstow Park on Friday Night with both teams looking to remain undefeated to start the season.

Elsewhere, Bankstown Sports Stars host a red-hot Panania Diggers side at Nick Kearns, while Bankstown Sports Strikers welcome a high-flying Yagoona Lions to Crest Sporting Complex.

Revesby Workers will look to upset and in from Padstow Hornets at Marco Reserve, while Georges River Thistle and Birrong Sports both search for their first win of the season.

Match of the Round: Padstow United vs Central Sydney Wolves, Friday 19th April 7:30pm @ Padstow Park

Previous Meeting: Padstow united 2-2 Central Sydney Wolves – Rd 15, 2023

Padstow United and Central Sydney Wolves play at Padstow Park for the first time this season as they both look to remain undefeated to start the 2024 season.

When these two sides met in Round 15 of the 2023 Season, it was an 89th minute goal from Padstow United’s John Martinez which led to the points being shared by the two sides.

4th placed Padstow United have looked a much more organised side compared to their 2023 campaign with their new coach/player signing, Sergio Tarazona playing a crucial role to their positive start in 2024 as he brings a wealth of experience having played most recently with Gladesville Ryde Magic in 2024.

Rafa Coutinho and John Martinez have already proved to be handful upfront to start the season having found the net 3 goals between themselves in their opening matches. Expect the pair to be on the hunt for more goals this weekend.

Padstow United have been strong in defence this season having only conceded 3 goals in their opening three games. Their defence will need to be rock solid again this weekend as they face a Central Sydney Wolves side who have scored 14 goals so far this season.

1st placed Central Sydney Wolves have been the form side of the competition so far this season having won all four of their games so far this season.

Central Syndey Wolves have a lot of new faces this season and they have proven to be a well drilled attacking machine having scored 14 goals in their opening four matches with the goals being scored by multiple different players.

Shoji Mori has looked to be the danger man for Central Sydney Wolves to start the season. Expect Shoji to be the danger man as Central Sydney Wolves aim to break down a strong Padstow United defence.

An entertaining match should be expected with both sides looking to keep up towards the top of the table.

Bankstown Sports Stars vs Panania Diggers, Saturday 20th April 4pm @ Nick Kearns Reserve

These two teams haven’t met in the last few seasons.

Bankstown Sports Stars are keen to bounce back from their recent defeat and return to their winning form as they welcome the undefeated Panania Diggers.

7th placed Bankstown Sports Stars have demonstrated promise since their return to top-tier football in Bankstown after several years. They will aim for a positive result this weekend to stay competitive with the top teams in the league.

Despite securing a win in one of their first three games this season, Bankstown Sports Stars will be focusing on tightening their defence after allowing 9 goals in their last two matches.

2nd placed Panania Diggers are on a strong run to start their season with 14 goals scored in their opening four matches and yet to taste defeat.

Benjamin Ross has kicked off his 2024 campaign impressively, scoring 4 goals already. He, along with teammates Nicholas Vertsonis and Joshua Adams, who are also formidable in attack, will be keen to keep the momentum going.

This upcoming match promises plenty of offensive opportunities, as both teams will be determined to secure the three points.

Bankstown Sports Strikers vs Yagoona Lions FC, Saturday 20th April 4pm @ Crest Sporting Complex

Previous Meeting: Yagoona Lions 2-3 Bankstown Sports Strikers – Preliminary Final, 2023

Yagoona Lions will be looking to make amends for their defeat to Bankstown Sports Strikers in the preliminary final in 2023 as they take on a Bankstown Sports Strikers side eager to get three points and start climbing up the ladder.

When these two sides met in the Premier League finals series in 2023, Bankstown Sports Strikers remained resilient in defence and hang on for a strong 3-2 victory despite finishing the match with only 9-men.

6th placed Bankstown Sports Strikers have experienced a varied start to the season, winning just one of their first four matches. As the reigning 2024 champions, they need to start accumulating valuable wins to keep pace with the top teams in the league.

Striker Youssef Nasreddine has been a standout, scoring three times in the last two games. The Strikers are optimistic about their scoring abilities heading into this weekend, but they are particularly focused on their defensive performance as they prepare to counter a potent Yagoona Lions attack.

3rd placed Yagoona Lions are one of only two teams that have yet to drop a point this season, boasting three wins from their first three matches.

Despite losing 2023 Gold Medal winner Jamie Bazevski to NPL side Bankstown City Lions, Yagoona’s attack has not slowed down, scoring 11 goals in three games.

Dejan Simonoski is the key forward for Yagoona Lions, having netted 5 goals in his first three matches and aiming to maintain his scoring streak.

This match promises plenty of excitement, as Bankstown Sports Strikers seek a crucial three points after a shaky start to the season, while Yagoona Lions aim to continue their undefeated run.

Revesby Workers FC vs Padstow Hornets FC, Saturday 20th April 4pm @ Marco Reserve

Previous Meeting: Revesby Workers 1-10 Padstow Hornets – Rd 14, 2023

Revesby Workers are aiming to secure their first win of the season as they face Padstow Hornets, who are coming off a significant victory last weekend.

In their last meeting during Round 14 of the previous season, the Hornets dominated with a 10-1 win, a match that Revesby Workers would prefer to forget.

9th placed Revesby Workers earned their first point of the season with a 2-2 draw against Birrong Sports on Thursday night.

They are determined to bolster their defence to avoid a repeat of last season’s heavy loss to Padstow Hornets FC.

Despite not securing a win in their first four games, Revesby Workers have demonstrated potential and are hopeful of claiming their first victory of the season this weekend.

5th placed Padstow Hornets are riding high from a resounding 5-1 win over Bankstown Sports Stars last weekend and are looking to keep the momentum going with another victory this weekend.

Sean O’Connell, fresh from scoring a season-high five goals in a single match against Bankstown Sports Stars, will be eager to continue his scoring spree.

With a seasoned squad, the Hornets are aiming for their third consecutive win. Their attack is expected to be in top form as they seek to secure another win this season.

With the Hornets in good form and Revesby Workers striving to hit their stride, this match could provide one of the season’s more unpredictable outcomes, with both teams battling hard to secure the three points.

Georges River Thistle FC vs Birrong Sports FC, Saturday 20th April 4pm @ Coleman Park

Previous Meeting: Birrong Sports 2-4 Georges River Thistle – Rd 19, 2022

Georges River Thistle and Birrong Sports are both eager to notch their first wins of the season in a match that could be crucial for both teams.

In their last encounter, Georges River Thistle emerged victorious, scoring three late goals to secure a 4-2 win.

Despite losing their first four matches of the season and sitting in 10th place, Georges River Thistle remains optimistic. A win this weekend could spark a positive momentum shift for the remainder of their season.

Although they have only managed to score three goals in their opening four matches, all goals have come from Mohamad Elzein. His continued influence up front will be key if Thistle hopes to secure a much-needed three points.

8th placed Birrong Sports earned their first point of the season with a 2-2 draw against Revesby Workers, even playing with nine men for the final 15 minutes of the match.

Jacob Marszal has been in top form for Birrong Sports, scoring seven out of their nine goals this season. He is expected to pose a significant threat once again this weekend.

With both teams hungry for a win, spectators can anticipate an exciting 90 minutes filled with goal-scoring opportunities at both ends of the pitch.

UWPL Grand Final Preview

After months of exciting football matches, two remarkable teams are set to collide in the Umbro Women’s Premier League Grand Final as they showcase the talent that Female Football has to offer in the Bankstown District.

Revesby Workers Maroon who are the form team of the competition having only lost one game this season, will take on the Premiers of the competition and the 2022 champions, Georges River Thistle.

Grand Final: Revesby Workers Maroon vs Georges River Thistle, 27th August 6pm @ Padstow Park

Previous Meeting: Georges River Thistle 1-1 Revesby Workers Maroon – Semi Final, 2023

Revesby Workers Maroon and Georges River Thistle meet for the 5th time this season as Revesby Workers Maroon look to make up for there fall out in last season’s finals series, while Georges River Thistle look to retain the title after their success in 2022.

The last time these two sides met, both sides were unable to be separated after 120 minutes of intense finals football, however, it was Revesby Workers Maroon who were the calmer of the two sides from the penalty as they defeated Georges River Thistle in the penalty shootout 3-1.

Revesby Workers Maroon have been the best attacking side in the competition as they have threats in attack across their whole front line and midfield. Two of the top scorers in the competition come from the Revesby Workers Maroon side with Marianna Konidaris and Mya Donnely constantly finding the back of the net throughout the 2023 season.

Although Revesby may struggle to see a lot of possession against Georges River Thistle, Revesby Maroon will look to win the ball and play forward quickly into their front line. Marianna Konidaris and Mya Donnelly will look to sit as attacking midfielders behind their front line and link up their play to try and break down a resilient Thistle defence who have not conceded many goals this season.

Olivia Lambkin will look to be a constant threat down their right side as she makes forward runs behind Thistles defence and looks to deliver pinpoint crosses into Georges River Thistle’s box to create chances for her attack.

Revesby Workers Maroon are in form and come into this match with a lot of positive momentum, however they will need to make sure they continue to play with energy and determination to not allow Thistle’s danger players find space in this game.

Georges River Thistle will be disappointed to have lost their last two meetings against Revesby Workers Maroon this season and will need to find some extra energy in their performances if they are to be crowned champions for consecutive seasons.

Thistle were 3-2 victors in their Major Final match last weekend which saw them progress to the Grand Finals this weekend, however, after some early dominance in the match they nearly let their lead slip through some lapse in concentration. They will look to be more focused for the full 90 minutes this weekend.

Thistle’s Monica Nolevski will be key for her team in this fixture as she plays in a central defensive midfielder role, shutting down Revesby Workers Maroon quick counter attacks before looking to use her strong left foot to play her speedy attackers in behind Revesby’s defence to create goals scoring opportunities.

Georges River Thistle’s defence has been key to their success this season as they conceded the least goals in the 2023 competition. Coutrney Mcgee’s pace in defence should prove vital this weekend as she looks to sweep any quick counter attacks by the Revesby Maroon side.

As the stage is set for un unforgettable Grand Final, join us at Padstow Park this Sunday as the two best Women’s Premier League sides go head-to-head with the winner being declared the 2023 Umbro Women’s Premier League champions.

BUPL Grand Final’s Preview

As the sun sets on an exhilarating season of highs, lows, and unforgettable moments, we find ourselves on the precipice of the ultimate showdown – the Bankstown Umbro Premier League Grand Final’s.

Central Sydney Wolves and Bankstown Sports Strikers Reserve Grade squads will be the first two teams to go head-to-head with the winner being named champions of the 2023 Reserve Grade competition and having their name engraved with past winner of the competition.

Then the final game this Saturday at Padstow Park will see Padstow Hornets, the only team to win the Premier League since 2017, take on Bankstown Sports Strikers who will be looking for revenge after their defeat at the hands of Padstow Hornets in the 2022 Grand Final.

The stage is set, the tension is palpable, and as the first whistle beckons, a symphony of passion and prowess will unfold, leaving an indelible mark on the beautiful game.

Reserve Grade Grand Final: Central Sydney Wolves vs Bankstown Sports Strikers, 26th August 4:30pm @ Padstow Park

Previous Meeting: Bankstown Sports Strikers 2-3 Central Sydney Wolves – Semi Final, 2023

Get ready for a football spectacle like no other as the Central Sydney Wolves lock horns with the Bankstown Sports Strikers in an upcoming clash that promises to be a riveting display of skill, strategy, and pure determination.

When these sides previously met two weeks ago in the semi-final, Central Sydney Wolves won the game 3-2 after extra-time which is seen by many as one of the upsets of the season as the dominant Bankstown Sports Strikers looked destined to go straight into the Grand Final.

Central Sydney Wolves will look to defy the odds once again in the Reserve Grade Grand Final as they play Bankstown Sports Strikers for the fourth time this season having only beaten them for the first time this season in their 3-2 Semi Final victory.

Central Sydney Wolves only finished 3rd on the competition ladder this season, however, due to two strong performances against the top two sides in the Reserve Grade Competition which saw them win both of their final’s matches, they confirmed their Grand Final position in 2023.

Central Sydney Wolves only have 13 players available for the Grand Final this weekend which may place their side at a disadvantage, however, being led by a strong coaching staff and their captain Mayas Hamdan, Central Sydney Wolves are expected to have their same fighting spirit they have had throughout the entire final’s series driving them towards another big victory.

Amidst a mixture of nerves and excitement, Central Sydney Wolves will look to showcase their months of dedication and hard work in the highly anticipated Reserve Grade Grand Final this weekend.

Bankstown Sports Strikers appear in the Reserve Grade Grand Final for the second season in a row as they look to make-up for a disappointing Grand Final loss in 2022 and lift the trophy in 2023.

Bankstown Sports Strikers have been a force to reckoned with in 2023 having finished premiers with the most goals scored and the least goals conceded in the Reserve Grade competition. However, having been defeated by a determined Central Sydney Wolves in their semi-final match two weeks ago, the Strikers will understand how unpredictable a final’s fixture can be and will need to be at their best to win this match.

With a strong record and a massive supporting crowd behind them, expect Bankstown Sports Strikers to play with the same courage and class that they have had throughout the entire season to get them over line in the Grand Final.

Get ready for a showdown of epic proportions as the best teams take center stage in the Grand Final, where a champion will emerge triumphant in a spectacle that will be remembered for years to come.

1st Grade Grand Final: Padstow Hornets vs Bankstown Sports Strikers, 26th August 6:30pm @ Padstow Park

Previous Meeting: Bankstown Sports Strikers 1-3 Padstow Hornets – Preliminary Final, 2023

It’s the moment we’ve been waiting for all season… After 18 intense rounds of the 1st grade competition and a captivating finals series, two heavy weights of the competition, Padstow Hornets and Bankstown Sports Strikers, will go head-to-head for the second consecutive 1st Grade Grand Final as both sides are determined to lift the trophy for different reasons.

Bankstown Sports Strikers will look to right the wrongs of the 2022 Grand Final where a single goal and some heroic saves by Padstow Hornets goalkeeper Mitchell Ashley saw Padstow Hornets win the final 1-0, while Padstow Hornets will be determined to win their 5th consecutive 1st Grade title and continue to their dominance in this competition.

These has not been much to split these two sides this season in their previous encounters, however, when these two sides met in the first round of finals this season, Padstow Hornets scored three unanswered goals in the second half of the match to defeat Bankstown Sports Strikers 3-1.

Padstow Hornets have not lost a game since Round 9 of the competition as they strived up the competition ladder to finish in 3rd place before winning their two fixtures in the finals series to book their spot in the Grand Final this season.

Padstow Hornets are a side that have been together for a long time and understand the qualities that are needed to win finals matches.

Mike Cklamovski, Neil Philippou, and Tom Kovacs have been some of the standouts for Padstow Hornets as they turned their performances around mid-way through the season and hit strong form coming into this match. Look for them to be strong in this match if their side are to win this match.

Look for a leader or two to step up for the Hornets, where a strong defence from the beginning will be a priority in what is no doubt their most important match of the season.

Bankstown Sports Strikers will be looking to finally end Padstow Hornets dominance in the Bankstown Premier League competition with an important win this weekend.

Ali Hassan’s Strikers side is known for being one of the most skilful and consistent teams in the competition, however, they will need to be at their best this weekend if they are to defeat a Padstow Hornets side who refuses to lose Grand Final matches.

Bankstown Sports Strikers showed their fighting spirit and courage in their 3-2 victory over the premiers Yagoona Lions last weekend as they played the second half with only 10-men before going down to 9-men late into the second half. If Bankstown Sports Strikers bring that same tenacity this weekend, we could see them finally lift the 1st grade trophy this weekend.

1st Grade finals don’t get more exciting than this. With a large crowd expected at Padstow Park to watch these two heavy weights of the competition go into battle, expect a fighting contest where one moment could decide it.

BUPL Major Finals Preview

Central Sydney Wolves Reserve Grade team and Padstow Hornets 1st grade team booked their grand finals spots last weekend in their respective competitions.

This weekend will see Yagoona Lions and Bankstown Sports Strikers go head-to-head in both grades as they battle it out for the final spot in the Grand Final’s next weekend.

Reserve Grade Major Final: Bankstown Sports Strikers vs Yagoona Lions, 19th August 3:30pm @ Padstow Park

Previous Meeting: Yagoona Lions 1-5 Bankstown Sports Strikers – Rd 10, 2023

Bankstown Sports Strikers took a shock loss to Central Sydney Wolves in extra time of their semi-final last weekend which will have them more focused for their fixture this weekend against Yagoona Lions as they are eager for a Grand Final spot in 2023, while Yagoona Lions came back from 1-0 down to defeat Panania Diggers 3-1 to keep their Grand Final hopes alive.

When these two sides met previously in Round 10, Bankstown Sports Strikers defeated Yagoona Lions 5-1 on Yagoona’s home turf courtesy of a hattrick hero as Strikers Ali Messelmani helped his side to victory. Bankstown Sports Strikers were also victorious in their round 7 clash which sees the Strikers as the favourites heading into this match.

1st placed Bankstown Sports Strikers will be looking for an improved performance after they lost 3-2 to Central Sydney Wolves last weekend in extra time. Bankstown Sports Strikers had defeated the Wolves heavily both times throughout the season, however, despite being the heavy favourites for the match they were defeated. Expect Bankstown Sports Strikers to look to right the wrongs of last weekend.

Bankstown Sports Strikers have been the best defensive side this season having only conceded 19 goals coming into this match. They have only conceded 1 goal against Yagoona Lions in their previous two meetings, Bankstown Sports Strikers will look to limit Yagoona’s chances in front of goal to prevent Yagoona finding a goal and giving Yagoona any hope of winning this fixture.

Strikers Mark Albro will most likely be their main target in attack as they look to find the back of the net in this match, however, with both Shervin Vargha and Ali Messelmani scoring a handful of goals when these two sides met in Round 10, Strikers look to have threats across their whole front line.

2nd placed Yagoona Lions fought back from a goal down early in the first half to defeat Panania Diggers 3-1 and continue their push for a grand final appearance. Yagoona Lions will feel like they need to do it tough this weekend as they face an opponent in Bankstown Sports Strikers who they have not defeated this season.

Yagoona Lions used their full squad to their advantage last weekend as they brought on 1st grade prolific goal scorer Jamie Bazevski, who scored 2 goals late to help his side to victory. However, Yagoona may be weary of bringing Jamie Bazevski on this weekend as their first-grade squad are also in a knockout fixture this weekend.

Yagoona Lions will look for a resilient defensive performance to limit Bankstown Sports Strikers chances in the match. The longer the games go on without Bankstown Sports Strikers scoring a goal, the more likely Yagoona will be to win this match.

Although Bankstown Sports Strikers have dominated Yagoona in previous meetings, anything can happen in finals football. Expect this one to go down to the wire as both sides look to secure their spot in the Grand Final next weekend.

1st Grade Major Final: Yagoona Lions vs Bankstown Sports Strikers, 19th August 5:30pm @ Padstow Park

Previous Meeting: Yagoona Lions 4-3 Bankstown Sports Strikers – Rd 10, 2023

1st vs 2nd will clash in the 1st grade major final this weekend with only one spot up for grabs in the grand final next weekend. Yagoona Lions unbeaten run came to an end last weekend as they lost 3-2 to Padstow Hornets after extra time which was their first loss since Round 8, while Bankstown Sports Strikers come off an important 3-2 victory against Panania Diggers to keep their Grand Final hopes alive.

When these two sides previously met in Round 10, there were 5 goals scored in the last 15 minutes as Yagoona Lions held onto a 2-goal advantage late to win the game 4-3. However, these two sides also clashed in Round 7 which saw the Strikers hold off Yagoona’s electric attack in a 2-0 victory with not much to split these two sides on paper.

1st placed Yagoona Lions could not hold onto a 2-0 lead last weekend as they conceded two goals late in regular time to Padstow Hornets before conceding again in extra time to lose the game 3-2. Yagoona Lions will need to pick themselves up and stay positive after losing their first game since Round 8 this season.

Yagoona Lions are attempting to make their first grand final appearance in 1st grade since 2011 which will have their squad determined to be victorious this weekend. They will be without Benne Owusu who has been a consistent starter for their side this season after he was red carded in their semi final last weekend.

Yagoona Lions will be looking to win again this weekend through their attack which has been their biggest weapon this season, however, Yagoona will need to learn from their lapse in concentration last weekend and make sure that if they’re to go in front this weekend, they will need to have better game management and hold onto their advantage.

2nd placed Bankstown Sports Strikers are looking for another Grand Final appearance this weekend as they eagerly look to make up for their loss in their Grand Final last weekend.

Bankstown Sports Strikers will take confidence in being the only side who have been able to keep Yagoona Lions deadly attack to zero goals in a match this season and will understand the importance of their defence this weekend if they are to win the match and progress to a Grand Final for a second consecutive season.

Bankstown Sports Strikers a play like a well-oiled machine with every player understanding their responsibility in the team, expect them to stick to their strengths as they look to defeat Yagoona Lions this weekend through their unique football style.

Expect a big crowd for an exciting 1st grade fixture as both sides prepare to fight for 90 minutes with the winner progressing to the Grand Final next weekend.

BUPL Semi Finals Preview

After Round 1 of the Bankstown Umbro Premier League finals series, only four teams remain in both the Reserve Grade and First Grade Competition. This weekend will bring another exciting weekend of BUPL finals football as we will see two teams knocked out of the competition and two teams book their spot in their respective Grand Finals.

Yagoona Lions and Panania Diggers Reserve Grade sides will go head-to-head for their first final of two for their clubs with the loser of this game being knocked out of the competition, while Central Sydney Wolves and Bankstown Sports Strikers Reserve Garde sides battle it out with the winner of this game booking a spot in the Reserve Grade Final in two weeks’ time.

While in 1st grade, Bankstown Sports Strikers and Panania Diggers looked to keep their seasons alive as they clash in the 1st grade knockout Semi-Final, while Yagoona Lions return from their week off to take on Padstow Hornets in an important battle to secure a Grand Final ticket.

Reserve Grade Knockout Semi-Final: Yagoona Lions vs Panania Diggers, 12th August 12:30pm @ Marco Reserve Field 2

Previous Meeting: Yagoona Lions 2-5 Panania Diggers – Rd 16, 2023

Yagoona Lions suffered a disappointing loss to Central Sydney Wolves in last week’s 2nd vs 3rd preliminary final and will be looking to keep their grand final hopes alive as they take on Panania Diggers who were defensively strong in their 1-0 win against Padstow United last weekend.

Panania Diggers were dominant when these two sides last met in Round 16 as a Jack Amy hattrick led his side to a 5-2 victory. Yagoona Lions look to have struggled against Panania Diggers Reserve Grade side this season with Panania Diggers also beating Yagoona 1-0 in their Round 5 meeting.

2nd placed Yagoona Lions will be looking for a more energetic start to their game this weekend after they conceded two goals in the first half against Central Sydney Wolves which meant they had to fight back into the match from two goals down.

Yagoona Lions, Dejan Simonoski was able to get onto the scoresheet last weekend as he has continued to be a threat up top for the Yagoona side, expect him to be the spark for his side if they are to push for the victory this weekend.

Although Yagoona Lions finished second on the ladder this season, Panania Diggers look to be a bogey side for them this season. If Yagoona are to win this weekend, they will need to put their previous results behind them and have a much stronger start to the game this weekend.

4th placed Panania Diggers overcame their first finals test last weekend as they won 1-0 against Padstow United in their preliminary knockout final. Their finals series journey does not get easier as they need to overcome a side that finished above them on the ladder to continue their progress in this year’s finals series.

Liam Binnington was the hero for the Panania side last weekend as his goal in the 57th minute split the two sides to give Panania the win. However, Panania victory ultimately was due to their rock-solid defence which has been strong all year and produce another stellar performance.

Panania will look for another resilient defensive performance this weekend if they are to limit Yagoona’s attacking opportunities and push them to victory.

Knock-out finals don’t get better than this as both sides look to keep their seasons alive in a blockbuster clash this weekend.

Reserve Grade Semi-Final: Bankstown Sports Strikers vs Central Sydney Wolves, 12th August 12:30pm @ Marco Reserve Field 4

Previous Meeting: Central Sydney Wolves 0-4 Bankstown Sports Strikers – Rd 13, 2023

Reserve Grade Premiers Bankstown Sports Strikers return from their weekend off as they look to book a grand final spot for the second year in a row as they take on Central Sydney Wolves who defeated Yagoona Lions last weekend and face their toughest test yet against a strong Bankstown Sports Strikers side.

When these two sides met in Round 13, Bankstown Sports Strikers put on a dominant performance which saw them win the game 4-0. Bankstown Sports Strikers look to be the massive favourites in this match as they were also victorious 4-0 in their first meeting back in Round 4.

1st placed Bankstown Sports Strikers have been dominant in the Reserve Grade Competition this season picking up 13 wins in 16 games whilst also scoring the most goals and conceding the fewest goals in the competition.

Strikers Mark Albro has been a consistent goal scorer this season for his side and looks to be a player that Central Sydney Wolves have struggled to contain in their recent meetings with Mark scoring a total of three goals in their two meeting this season.

Despite Bankstown Sports Strikers being dominant in their two meeting with Central Sydney Wolves this season, they will know from past experiences that anything can happen in finals, and they will need to be at their best if they are to book a grand finals spot this weekend.

3rd placed Central Sydney Wolves proved last weekend that they are one of the top teams in the competition when they defeated Yagoona Lions 2-1 in the 2nd vs 3rd preliminary final and will now look to overcome the best team in the competition so far to book a grand final spot this weekend.

The Wolves Mayas Hamdan continued his goal scoring form last weekend when he scored the first goal of the game against Yagoona Lions last weekend, expect him to try and lead his side to another important victory this weekend.

Although Central Sydney Wolves have scored the second most goals in the competition this season, they were unable to score a single goal in their two fixtures against Bankstown Sports Strikers this season and will need to find a way to create more chances in front of goal this weekend.

A spot in the grand final for the winner this weekend will have both sides fired up, expect both sides to be energetic from the start with a result that could go either way.

1st Grade Knockout Semi-Final: Bankstown Sports Strikers vs Panania Diggers, 12th August 2:30pm @ Marco Reserve Field 2

Previous Meeting: Bankstown Sports Strikers 2-1 Panania Diggers – Rd 15, 2023

Bankstown Sports Strikers return off their 3-1 preliminary final loss last weekend to Padstow Hornets as they take on Panania Diggers who found their form back last weekend against Central Sydney Wolves and look to continue their progress through the finals series this weekend.

When these two sides last met in Round 15, it was a fiery match which saw 14 cards handed out including three red cards as Bankstown Sports Strikers won the match 2-1. Bankstown Sports Strikers have won both of their meetings with Panania Diggers this season which includes their 3-1 victory at Kelso in Round 8. Panania Diggers will be needing to find a way to breakdown the Bankstown Sports Strikers side as they have not been able to do in the past.

2nd placed Bankstown Sports Strikers would be disappointed with their result last weekend after taking an early lead in the first half before conceding three unanswered goals in the second half which stunned the onlooking crowd last Saturday night.

Bankstown Sports Strikers are now left with no second chances in the final’s series meaning they will need to win all their matches if they are to make the grand final this season. However, Bankstown Sports Strikers are a team with players who have experienced finals football in the past and know how to find a result this weekend.

Cameron Campisi has scored three out of the five goals for Bankstown Sports Strikers when they have met Panania Diggers this season; expect Cameron to try and create chances for his side in attack to break open a resilient Panania Diggers defence this weekend.

5th placed Panania Diggers showed their fighting spirit last weekend in their preliminary knock-out final last weekend against Central Sydney Wolves when they went a goal down in the 60th minute before scoring three goals late to win the game 3-1 and progress to the next round of the BUPL finals series.

Panania’s central defender and captain Douglas Nabaki scored the first goal back for his side last weekend as he led his side to victory. He will be important for his side once again this weekend as Panania’s boast a youthful squad and will need his leadership in an important match.

Although they have been unable to defeat Bankstown Sports Strikers this season, expect Panania to play with confidence as they look to be the underdogs in the 2023 1st grade finals series.

1st Grade Semi-Final: Yagoona Lions vs Padstow Hornets, 12th August 2:30pm @ Marco Reserve Field 4

Previous Meeting: Padstow Hornets 3-3 Yagoona Lions – Rd 17, 2023

First Grade Premiers Yagoona Lions returns off a week off as they look to continue their successful 2023 season and book a grand final spot this weekend as they take on Padstow Hornets who will be buzzing after their 3-1 victory against Bankstown Sports Strikers last weekend and looking to use their positive momentum to grab another victory this weekend.

When these two sides last met in Round 17, they were the two from teams of the competition as they drew 3-3 after Yagoona’s Jamie Bazevski scored a 30-yard freekick to rescue a point for his side. Padstow Hornets have not been able to defeat Yagoona Lions this season as they suffered a 3-2 loss to the premiers in Round 9 which was the last time Padstow Hornets lost a game this season.

1st placed Yagoona Lions have proven this season that they have deserved the title of premiers in the 1st grade competition, and they will be looking for another five-star performance this weekend to book a spot in their first grand final appearance since 2011.

Yagoona’s Jamie Bazevski will look to be the spark in attack for the Yagoona side this weekend as he has done all season. Jamie Bazevski has found the back of the net four times against Padstow Hornets this season, so expect him to be tightly marked by the Padstow Hornets side as they look to prevent Bazevski from finding chances in front of goal.

Yagoona have proven in 2023 that they are an attacking machine of a team, however they have conceded five goals against Padstow Hornets this season and they will be needing to be resilient in defence to hold out Padstow Hornets quality attack this weekend.

3rd placed Padstow Hornets are a team in form and understand how to win finals matches as they came from behind to defeat Bankstown Sports Strikers 3-1 last weekend.

Padstow Hornets attackers Mike Cklamovski and Neil Philippou have continued their goal scoring form in the second half of the 2023 season after they both scored in their finals victory last weekend and will be looking to score more goals this weekend.

If Padstow Hornets are to defeat Yagoona Lions for the first time this season, they will need to limit Yagoona’s chances on goal and be clinical with their chances in attack to win the game this weekend.

This fixture shapes up to be a blockbuster of a match as both sides will be desperate to secure a Grand Final spot with a win this weekend.

UWPL Semi-Finals Preview

After fifteen intense rounds of the Umbro Women’s Premier League competition, we head into the first round of the finals series with four teams remaining in the competition and one set to be knocked out this Sunday.

The premiers Georges River Thistle will go head-to-head against Revesby Workers Maroon with the winner progressing straight to UWPL Grand Final on the 27th of August, while East Bankstown will play in a knock-out final against Revesby Workers White with the winner taking on the loser of other final in the UWPL Major Final next weekend.

Knock-out Final: East Bankstown vs Revesby Workers White, 13th August 2:30pm @ Crest Sporting Complex Field 2

Previous Meeting: Revesby Workers White 0-1 East Bankstown – Rd 13, 2023

East Bankstown come into the finals with strong form in their finals matches of the regular season as they take on Revesby Workers White who are the underdogs of the finals series and have their sight’s set on making a grand final appearance in 2023.

When these two sides met in Round 13 East Bankstown were victorious 1-0 as their defence couldn’t be broken down by the Revesby Workers White team. East Bankstown look to have the upper hand coming into this match as these side have met three times this season with East Bankstown winning two of three games.

3rd placed East Bankstown come off a bye in Round 15 as they will be feeling refreshed and ready to play their most important fixture of the season so far. East Bankstown are undefeated in their last three matches and will be looking to use their positive momentum to get themselves over the line this weekend.

East Bankstown have the second fewest goals conceded this season which has included six clean sheets in their 13 games this season, two of which have come against Revesby Workers White.

East Bankstown have not scored as many goals as the top teams in the competition as they look to win games through their resilience in defence. However, in attack, East Bankstown’s danger woman Tara Edmiston who finished the season on seven goals will look to be the player to break open Revesby Workers White defence.

4th placed Revesby Workers White have had an up and down which had seen them lead the competition after three rounds before winning one game out of their last ten and falling back to fourth place. However, they will be happy to have qualified for the final’s series and with a wealth of experience on their side they will be looking to create an upset in 2023.

Although conceding the most goals this season, Revesby White’s captain and goalkeeper Louise Cousins has been a standout for her side this season, if they are to win this game, here presence and leadership between the sticks will be important.

Revesby Workers White have only found the back of the net 14 times this season, however, Karen Bennett has found the back of the net for half of their goals this season and will look to be their main outlet in attack this weekend.

In a match where we will see one side knocked out of the UWPL finals series for 2023, plenty of fight will be on display for both teams as they look to continue their charge through to the Major Final next weekend.

Semi-Final: Georges River Thistle vs Revesby Workers Maroon, 13th August 2:30pm @ Crest Sporting Complex Field 1

Previous Meeting: Revesby Workers Maroon 2-1 Georges River Thistle – Rd 12, 2023

Georges River Thistle who are the UWPL premiers of 2023 and the reigning champions from 2022 will be eager to retain their champions status this season as they take on Revesby Workers Maroon who will be eager to win this match with the winner automatically progressing the Grand Final two weeks from now.

The last time these two sides met was in Round 12 this season where Revesby Workers won the last of their three meetings this season. These two sides look to be very evenly matched based on previous results with both sides winning a game each and the other meeting ending in a draw.

1st placed Georges River Thistle have had a successful season which has seen them win 10 out of their 13 games to finish on top of the ladder with the best goal difference and the least goals conceded in their 2023 UWPL campaign.

Georges River Thistle’s strong defence has only seen them concede more than one goal in three matches this season. However, Georges River Thistle have not won a game this season when conceding 2 or more goals in a game which will mean defence will be key for them this weekend if they are to win the game.

Thistle have also scored the second most goals this season with 40 goals scored as a team. Thistle has multiple players in their team who know how to find the back of the net with five players who have scored five or more goals this season which highlights their quality all over the pitch. Thistle’s number 9, Candice Prain has found her goalscoring form towards the end of the season with five goals scored in her last five matches, expect her to try and leader her side to another important victory.

2nd placed Revesby Workers Maroon are the form side of the competition heading into the UWPL finals series in 2023 having not lost a game since Round 2 this season where they were suffered a 7-1 defeat at the hands of Georges River Thistle.

Revesby Worker’s Maroon looked to have 1st placed wrapped up when they defeated Georges River Thistle 2-1 in Round 12 of the season, however, they drew 1-1 with East Bankstown in Round 14 of the season which cost them the UWPL premiers title in 2023. They will be eager to use this as added fuel as they look to defeat Georges River Thistle this weekend and confirm a Grand Final spot this weekend.

Revesby Workers Maroon were the best attacking side in 2023 with 48 goals scored in the competition. Mya Donnelly and Marianna Konidaris have been lethal upfront for their side with both scoring 10 or more goals this season. Olivia Lambkin has also been a standout for her team as she looks to be their key player in midfield and if all three players perform this weekend they could go along way to winning the game this Sunday.

With the top two sides of the competition going head-to-head this weekend in a fixture which has a track record of being an intense affair, expect this match to be a blockbuster as both sides look to book a grand final spot this Sunday.
