It was an exciting weekend for our Umbro Women’s Premier League competition as we had two games where both teams were unable to be separated.
The Match of the Round in Round 11 saw a physical top of the table clash between Georges River Thistle and Revesby Workers Maroon as a strong battle ended with both sides sharing the spoils.
Elsewhere, Birrong held off the constant attacking pressure from East Bankstown as both sides settled for a draw at Padstow Park.
Revesby Workers White had a bye this round.
Match of the Round: Georges River Thistle 2-2 Revesby Workers Maroon
Both Georges River Thistle and Revesby Workers Maroon were unable to extend their win-streak as an exciting second half away both teams settled for a 2-2 draw.
When these two sides met in in round two this season, Georges Thistle dominated in a 7-1 victory. With that result in the back of the Workers minds, they looked fired up for this match.
The opening encounters in this match saw both teams evenly matched as they battled for field position through their physicality and upbeat style of play.
The first goal of the match came in the 32nd minute of the match through Thistle’s join top goal scorer Brooke Williams as her shot found the back of the net.
Revesby Maroon looked to find an equaliser shortly after conceding, however, Thistle would have a 1-0 advantage going into half time.
Revesby Maroon would finally have their equaliser as their joint top goal scorer Marianna Konidaris found their breakthrough goal in the 67th minute to level the game at 1-1.
Moments later Revesby Maroon took the lead through a goal by Amira Djanati as she gained her side a 1-goal advantage with 20 minutes left to play.
In another twist to the tale, Thistle’s number 9 Candice Prain found the back of the net in the 76th minute to bring the game all level for the third time in the match.
With 15 minutes left in the match, both sides searched for the winner, however, both sides were unable to finish their chances as the game ended 2-2.
Thistle remains in 1st position after the weekend, while Revesby Maroon remain in second position and 3-points behind the league leaders as they still have a game in hand.
Birrong Sports 0-0 East Bankstown
Birrong Sports and East Bankstown settled for a 0-0 draw in their match after Birrong’s strong defence were able to hold a determined East Bankstown attack at bay.
Tensions were high coming into this match as both teams were looking for a vital three points for different reasons in their 2023 campaigns.
Both sides looked right up for this fixture in the opening exchanges of the match, however, both sides struggled to create clear cut chances as two very good defensive sides went toe-to-toe.
East Bankstown looked to hold more possession in the match as they created chances through their quick interchange of passes, while Birrong Sports looked to win the ball and play forward quickly using their pace out wide.
Birrong Sports Emily Mcgrath created a few chances for her side going forward but they were unable to convert as the sides went into halftime at 0-0.
East Bankstown came out into the second half rejuvenated as they dominated field position giving Birrong Sports no opportunity to get out of their own half.
East Bankstown’s Chiara Nohra and Tara Edmiston created half chances for themselves, but they struggled to hit the target as they searched for an important goal.
Birrong goalkeeper Lauren Croucher was vital for her side in the second half as she came up with important saves to help keep her side in the match as East Bankstown continued to find shooting chances.
East Bankstown fought hard but were unable to find a winner, while Birrong Sports defence was strong as the game ended 0-0.
Birrong Sports remain in 5th position as they move slightly closer to 4th position, while East Bankstown remain in 3rd position.
