BDAFA WPL ball 2023

After Round 3 of the Umbro Women’s Premier League we have new competition leaders as the ladder continues to tighten up at the top end of the competition.

Our round 3 Match of the Round saw Revesby Workers Maroon bounce back with a big win over Birrong Sports.

Elsewhere, Georges River Thistle picked up back-to-back wins after defeating East Bankstown Yellow, while Revesby Workers White defeated East Bankstown Red in a top of the table clash.

Match of the Round: Revesby Workers Maroon 6-1 Birrong Sports

Revesby Workers Maroon put on a show against a slow starting Birrong Sports as they won the game 6-1 bouncing back from a massive defeat in round 2.

Workers Marissa Tsimboukis would be the first to score in the game as her shot hit the back of the net to put the workers 1-goal ahead.

It wouldn’t be long till Workers had their second as Abbey Warren also fired home her shot in the 27th minute to give Workers a 2-goal advantage as Birrong looked to be on the back foot early.

Birrong didn’t take their foot off the throttle as they continued to create attacking chances, but they were unable to convert as the sides went into halftime with Revesby Maroon leading 2-0.

Birrong have struggled in front of goal in the competition so far and they would need to come out firing in the second if they were to overturn their first half deficit.

Workers were straight back into dominating possession as they had done in the first half, and it was Mya Donnelly who opened the second half scoring with her goal in the 59th minute of the match as she dominates the scoring list in 2023.

Workers Maroon would get their fourth goal three minutes later courtesy of Marianna Konidaris as her side leads the game 4-0 with a comeback looking to look out of reach for Birrong.

Workers Emily Carruthers would add their 5th goal in the 68th minute of the match before Olivia Lambkin made it 6-0 for the workers ten minutes later.

Birrong’s Emma Pavez would score a consolation goal in the 82nd minute to bring it back to 6-1 but it was too little too late as Revesby Workers Maroon won the match 6-1.

Revesby Maroon now sit 3rd on the competition ladder 1-point off first place, while Birrong Sports remain in 5th spot as they continue to look for their first win of the season.

Georges River Thistle 4-0 East Bankstown Yellow

Georges River Thistle make it back-to-back wins in the competition as they defeated East Bankstown Yellow 4-0 as Easts still search for their first points of the season.

Georges River Thistle looked destined to score the first goal in the first half, however Easts Yellow have been resilient and strong in defence in the first half of their opening two games and this game was no different as they were able to hold out a well-structured Georges River Thistle attack for most of the first half.

However, when the game looked to be heading into halftime at 0-0, ex Bankstown City Lions junior, Monica Nolevski hit the back of the net to give Thistle a 1-0 lead going into half time.

In the second half both sides looked to create goal scoring opportunities once again, with both sides unable to finish their chances.

It wasn’t until the 75th minute of the match when Thistle finally found their second goal as their number 11, Jade Averillo found the back of the net.

Thistle would go on to score their third in the 84th minute courtesy of a goal by Brooke Williams followed by their captain, Paige Casacchia scoring moments later to give Thistle a 4-0 lead with only minutes left to play.

The game would end with Thistle defeating Easts Yellow 4-0 as Easts second halves continue to hurt them.

Thistle currently sits second on the competition ladder a point behind first place, while Easts Yellow sit 6th as they continue to look for their first points of the season.

Revesby Workers White 3-2 East Bankstown Red

Revesby Workers White defeated East Bankstown Red 3-2 as they are the only undefeated team to start the competition as East Bankstown Red take their first loss of the season.

Revesby Workers White were the better team to start the game as Workers number 11, Karen Bennett found the back of the net to give her side a 1-0 lead.

It didn’t take long before Workers White had their second as it was Karen Bennett once again scoring her second goal of the match in the 13th minute to as her side went to a 2-0 lead.

The first 15 minutes looked to be all Revesby Workers as they scored again in the 15th minute of the match as Danielle Mary Merlino’s shot found the back of the net as Workers White jumped to a 3-0 lead in the 15 minutes of the match.

After a slow start to the match, East Bankstown Red started to tighten up their defence and gain control of the match, but they had a massive job on their hands if they were going to get back into this match.

Just before half time, East Bankstown’s captain Chiara Nohra would score in the 43rd minute to give her side some momentum going into the sheds at halftime.

In the second half, Easts Red continued to create attacking opportunities as they aimed to come back from their early deficit, however, a resilient Workers defence were able to hold out everything East through at them.

Easts Chiara Nohra would make it a brace for herself in the 86th minute of the match to bring the game back to 3-2 but it was too little too late as Revesby Workers White won the game 3-2.

East Red now sit in 4th position on the ladder, while Revesby Workers White are now leaders of the competition as they are the only remaining undefeated team in the competition.
