Round nine of the Umbro Women’s Premier League saw the top two teams of the competition pick up important wins as they begin to move away from the rest of the competition.

The Match of the Round saw late drama as Revesby Workers Maroon went on to beat East Bankstown in a tight affair.

Elsewhere, Revesby Workers White could not hold onto their early lead as Georges River Thistle won the game.

Birrong Sports had a bye this round.

 

Match of the Round: East Bankstown 2-3 Revesby Workers Maroon

This weeks Match of the Round did not disappoint between 2nd and 3rd on the table as a five-goal thriller saw Revesby Workers Maroon score a late winner to win the game 3-2 in a clash that was full of twists and turns.

East Bankstown have kept two clean sheets in their last two matches and looked to make three-in-a-row with their back four of Maria Koletti, Patricia Mallios, Amy Peters, and Carlo-Jo Cutrupi lining up at the back for the third week in a row.

In the opening exchanges of the match, East’s were awarded a freekick which Tara Edmiston stepped up and rocketed a shot which was denied by the crossbar.

Revesby Workers Maroon would break the deadlock in the 25th minute as Workers Marianna Konidaris was played in behind the Easts defence before she slotted the ball into the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

We would not see another goal in the first half of the match as Revesby Workers Maroon went into halftime with a 1-goal advantage.

In the 64th minute of the match, Easts were awarded another freekick which this time Tara Edmiston stepped up and found the back of the net to bring the scores all level at 1-1.

East Bankstown’s Cecilia Millar would score her first goal of the season as she was found in the box from a corner before she volleyed the ball into the back of the net to give East Bankstown a 2-1 lead with 15 minutes left to play.

Two minutes later after conceding, Revesby Maroon showed their fighting spirit as Samantha Kontogiorgis found space from distance as she fired a shot into the back of the net to bring the scores back all level at 2-2 in the 77th minute.

The game looked as if it would end all square, however, in the 89th minute of the match the Workers Mya Donelly found the ball in the box before she slotted the ball into the back of the net to give Revesby Workers a 3-2 lead and ultimately win her side the match.

East Bankstown remain in 3rd place as they now sit four points behind Revesby Workers Maroon heading into their bye in Round 10, while Revesby Workers Maroon remain in second place as they head into the Revesby Workers derby in Round 10.

 

 

 

Revesby Workers White 1-3 Georges River Thistle

Georges River Thistle came back from a one goal deficit to defeat Revesby Workers White 3-1 and remain on the top of the ladder heading into Round 10.

Revesby Workers White were desperate to extend their gap between themselves and Birrong Sports on the bottom of the ladder as they looked to be fired up for this match.

Revesby Workers White were the first to score as Zara McAusland cut past Thistle defenders before she fired a shot into the side netting of the goal to give Revesby a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute of the match.

However, Georges River Thistle would fire back in the 35th minute as Thistle’s leading goal scorer Jorja Murray found the back of the net to bring the scores back level at 1-1 going into half time.

In the 54th minute of the match Thistle’s Number 9 Candice Prain was dragged down in the box with Thistle being awarded a penalty.

Thistle’s number 6, Monica Nolevski stepped up to the spot where she converted the penalty to give her side a 2-1 lead.

With not long to go in the match, Revesby Workers looked to throw numbers forward in the hopes of finding an equaliser late into the match.

However, a ball was played by Thistle’s in behind the Workers defence which Thistle’s Candice Prain ran onto and slotted the ball into the back of the net to give Thistle a 3-1 lead in the 85th minute of the match.

Georges River Thistle went onto win the match 3-1.

Revesby Workers White remain in 4th place one point ahead of 5th place heading into a Revesby Workers derby in Round 10, while Georges River Thistle remain in 1st place as they play bottom of the ladder Birrong Sports in Round 10.
