UWPL Round 6 Review

BDAFA WPL ball 2023

Round six of our Umbro Women’s Premier League Competition was full of tight contests as teams aim to chase down the top two who are leading the pack six rounds in.

The Match of the Round saw Birrong Sports and Revesby Workers White end all square for the second time this season.

Elsewhere, Georges River Thistle got their revenge over East Bankstown Red as they made it five wins in a row.

East Bankstown Yellow forfeited their game against Revesby Workers Maroon.

Match of the Round: Birrong Sports 1-1 Revesby Workers White

Birrong Sports and Revesby Workers White could not be separated for the second time this season as the game ended 1-1 with both sides splitting the spoils.

Both sides have struggled in front of goal to start the season with limited attacking chances coming in the first half of this match

A resilience in defence was shown from both sides as they did not want to give their opposition the opening goal advantage in an important game.

The game would go into halftime with the sides locked up at 0-0.

We would see the opening goal come early into the second half in similar fashion to when these sides first met in round one as it was Workers Karen Bennett once again scoring the first goal of the match as she found the back of the net in the 52nd minute.

However, going a goal down did not deter the Birrong side as they found a goal of their own moments later through their flying winger Emily Mcgrath as she found the back of the net in the 55th minute.

Both sides continued to search for a winner, but to no avail, as the score would end 1-1 for the second time this season.

East Bankstown Red 1-2 Georges River Thistle

Georges River Thistle boosted their winning streak to five wins in a row as they defeated East Bankstown Red 2-1.

East Bankstown Red are the only team to defeat Thistle this season after their comeback victory in round 1 as they looked to knock over the league leaders for the second time this season.

It was Easts Red who opened the scoring early into this match as Salsabelle Abdul-Karim found the back of the net to give Easts Red a 1-0 lead.

After conceding early, Thistle looked to get back into the match as they began to create chances of their own.

In the 20th minute of the match, it was Thistle ‘s Monica Nolevski who equalised for her side as her shot found the back of the net to make it 1-1.

With the end of the half nearing, it was Thistle’s leading goal scorer, Jorja Murray who put her side 2-1 up going into halftime with her goal in the 41st minute.

Easts Red looked to find an equaliser in the second half, but they struggled to break through Thistle’s defence.

Thistle went down to ten players in the 80th minute after Hayley Stone was given a technical dismissal, however, with a one player advantage, Easts could not find their equaliser as the game ended with Thistle defeating East Bankstown Red 2-1.

Revesby Workers Maroon 3-0 East Bankstown Yellow

East Bankstown Yellow forfeited their game against Revesby Workers Maroon.
